On the joint-effect of class imbalance and overlap: a critical review

Miriam Seoane Santos et al.

Summary: Current research on imbalanced data recognizes that class imbalance is exacerbated by other data intrinsic characteristics, among which class overlap is considered one of the most harmful. The combination of these two issues creates a challenging scenario for classification tasks, and there is a need to move towards a unified view of the class overlap problem in imbalanced domains. This paper presents a global and unique perspective on the joint-effect of class imbalance and overlap and discusses the importance of accurately measuring and analyzing multiple representations of class overlap for a full characterization of the problem.

Imbalanced Sample Selection With Deep Reinforcement Learning for Fault Diagnosis

Saite Fan et al.

Summary: This article proposes a novel general imbalanced sample selection strategy (DiagSelect) based on deep reinforcement learning to solve the problem of data imbalance in fault diagnosis. DiagSelect intelligently selects imbalanced samples to improve diagnosis performance and can be easily used in conjunction with conventional diagnosis models.
