Transcurrent tectonic system and deep seismogenic mechanism in the southeastern Tibetan Plateau: A view from gravity and magnetic anomalies

Feiyu Zhao et al.

Summary: The southeastern Tibetan Plateau margin (SETPM) is characterized by a series of curved strike-slip faults around the eastern Himalayan Syntaxis. The movement of materials from SETPM during the Cenozoic led to intense crustal deformation in the Sichuan-Yunnan Block, forming the transcurrent tectonic system. By analyzing gravity, magnetism, Moho discontinuity, and Curie surface distribution, along with seismic velocity structure and sedimentation data, we examined the tectonic system and seismogenic environment of SETPM.

3-D Crustal Azimuthal Anisotropy Reveals Multi-Stage Deformation Processes of the Sichuan Basin and Its Adjacent Area, SW China

Zhiqi Zhang et al.

Summary: The collision of the South China Block and the North China Block, along with the eastward extrusion of the Tibetan Plateau materials, have resulted in complex tectonic deformation and high seismic activity in the Sichuan Basin. In this study, we used data from 483 instruments to create a 3-D high-resolution model of shear wave velocity and azimuthal anisotropy through ambient noise tomography. Our findings reveal significant lateral variations in azimuthal anisotropy within the crust, with different regions displaying different levels of deformation. The results provide valuable insights into the multi-stage deformation processes in and around the Sichuan Basin.

USTClitho2.0: Updated Unified Seismic Tomography Models for Continental China Lithosphere from Joint Inversion of Body-Wave Arrival Times and Surface-Wave Dispersion Data

Shoucheng Han et al.

Summary: Xin et al. (2019) presented updated 3D velocity models (V-P and V-S) of the continental China lithosphere (USTClitho2.0) using joint inversion of body-wave arrival times and surface-wave dispersion data. The new models have higher spatial resolution and better resolve the complex tectonics of continental China. They are more accurate, fitting both body-wave arrival times and surface-wave dispersion data, and can serve as a better reference model for regional-scale tomography and geodynamic studies in continental China.

Aseismic Slip and Cascade Triggering Process of Foreshocks Leading to the 2021 Mw 6.1 Yangbi Earthquake

Xiaoge Liu et al.

Summary: Understanding the nature of foreshock evolution is crucial for earthquake nucleation and hazard evaluation. The study observes the relocation of the 2021 Yangbi earthquake sequences, finding that foreshocks align in the northwest-southeast direction and migrate towards the hypocenters of large events. The observed increase in static Coulomb stress suggests that the foreshocks act as aseismic transients promoting the cascade triggering of both foreshocks and the eventual mainshock. By analyzing data, the study also uncovers a blind vertical fault with a peak slip of 0.8 m as the source of the mainshock, indicating lateral crustal extrusion and lower crustal flow as the major driving mechanisms. The potential seismic hazards on the Weixi-Weishan and Red River faults are highlighted.

The seismogenic structures and migration characteristics of the 2021 Yangbi M6.4 Earthquake sequence in Yunnan, China

Kun Yan et al.

Summary: By re-scanning continuous waveforms integrated with deep learning and template matching techniques, we constructed a more complete earthquake catalog in the 2021 Yangbi M6.4 focal area to explore the seismogenic structures and nucleation process. The new catalog has a higher number of earthquakes and a lower magnitude completeness compared to the CENC catalog. The distribution of earthquakes indicates a broom-shaped structure with oblique secondary faults and a strike-slip main fault. The southern part of the area has denser and higher magnitude aftershocks, possibly due to a weakened seismic gap caused by fluid at depth. Foreshocks were concentrated in the 8-kilometer-long fault zone south of the mainshock and showed a migration pattern towards the epicenter. In contrast, the northern part had fewer foreshocks and delayed triggered aftershocks that were shallow and small in magnitude. In summary, the northern part of the Yangbi fault is relatively locked, while the southern part has a weakening zone that promotes pre-slip.

Crustal and Uppermost Mantle Heterogeneities Across the Ailaoshan Red River Shear Zone, SE Tibet: Implications for Cenozoic Magmatic Activity

Mijian Xu et al.

Summary: The Ailaoshan Red River shear zone is a suture zone between the Indochina block and the Yangtze craton. Block extrusion during the Indo-Asian collision has caused large-scale shearing and the formation of gold deposits. Seismic imaging and numerical modeling reveal low-velocity zones and thinned lithosphere in the subsurface.

The Community Velocity Model V.1.0 of Southwest China, Constructed from Joint Body- and Surface-Wave Travel-Time Tomography

Ying Liu et al.

Summary: The study aims at building a high-resolution community velocity model (CVM) of crust and uppermost mantle in southwest China by joint inversion of body- and surface-wave travel-time data to address the issues of consistent earthquake locations and velocity models. The resulting VP and VS models show two low-velocity zones in the middle-lower crust and a prominent high-velocity region. These new models serve as the first version of the CVM in southwest China for future studies.

A Large Magma Reservoir Beneath the Tengchong Volcano Revealed by Ambient Noise Adjoint Tomography

Y. Zhao et al.

Summary: A high-resolution 3D model of the Tengchong volcano system revealed a large basaltic magma reservoir with a volume of 7,000 km³ at depths of 20-35 km, fueled by partial melting in the uppermost mantle and recharging the shallow magma chambers beneath the volcano. These findings are crucial for understanding volcanic activities and assessing future eruption hazards.

Crustal thickness in southeast Tibet based on the SWChinaCVM-1.0 model

Liyi Chen et al.

Summary: Extensive geophysical research in southeast Tibet focused on the Moho interface for useful information. The SWChinaCVM-1.0 model for the Sichuan-Yunnan region was found to have limitations in the CCP stacking method, requiring improvements. Stacking based on the v(S) model was deemed more reliable and led to the development of the SWChinaCVM-MOHO-1.0 model.
