Perceived motor competence in early childhood predicts perceived and actual motor competence in middle childhood

Donna Niemisto et al.

Summary: The study aimed to identify and analyze the perceived and actual motor competence profiles in children over a 3-year period. Through the use of various assessments, the study found that children who had low perceived motor competence in early childhood were at risk of having lower motor competence and development in middle childhood. Different profiles were observed for boys and girls at each time point. The study highlights the importance of early intervention and support for children with low perceived motor competence.

Identifying actual and perceived motor competence based profiles among children

Chelsey Lawson et al.

Summary: This study identified four groups of divergent and convergent motor competence profiles in British children aged 7-10, based on their actual and perceived motor competence, showing differences in motivation towards physical activity between these profiles. Children with high actual process and high perceived motor competence demonstrated significantly higher levels of autonomous motivation towards physical activity.

What factors relate to three profiles of perception of motor competence in young children?

Donna Niemisto et al.

Summary: This study aimed to examine the relationship between children's perception of motor competence and their actual motor competence, as well as investigate the associations with socioecological factors. The findings showed that over-estimators tended to be younger, and their parents reported more health and developmental issues. Additionally, parents of under-estimators were found to provide more support for physical activity.

The effects of motor skill and physical activity interventions on preschoolers' cognitive and academic skills: A systematic review

Pinja Jylanki et al.

Summary: This systematic review examined the methodological quality and effects of interventions targeting fundamental motor skills and physical activity on cognitive and academic skills in typically developing children aged 3 to 7 years. The majority of the included studies demonstrated beneficial effects of the interventions on cognitive and academic skills, particularly in enhancing memory. Combined interventions had larger effects compared to interventions solely targeting fundamental motor skills or physical activity.

Through the Looking Glass: A Systematic Review of Longitudinal Evidence, Providing New Insight for Motor Competence and Health

Lisa M. Barnett et al.

Summary: This systematic review compiled evidence on the role of motor competence in children's physical activity, weight status, perceived motor competence, and health-related fitness. Strong evidence was found for negative association between motor competence and weight status, as well as positive pathway from motor competence to fitness. However, evidence for other pathways varied, including indeterminate and insufficient evidence for some associations. Future research should focus on robust longitudinal studies and experimental designs to further test the proposed conceptual model.

Profiling children longitudinally: A three-year follow-up study of perceived and actual motor competence and physical fitness

Isaac Estevan et al.

Summary: This longitudinal study aimed to develop profiles based on perceived and actual motor competence and physical fitness in Spanish typically developing children. Results revealed five profiles, with highly perceived and capable children showing higher physical activity participation and lower body mass index and waist circumference over time.
