Dr McCarty is a true giant of rheumatology. His clinical and scientific discoveries made a major impact on our specialty, and many patients have benefited from his work. He has been an exceptional mentor and role model to many generations of physicians and was a true triple threat during his long and productive career. All three of the au-thors of this article had the great privilege to know and work with him. We can attest to the major positive impact he has had on our own clinical practice styles, the value we place on clinical observation, and the way in which we approach scientific questions. We all feel extremely lucky to have had our professional lives enriched by his presence and greatly enjoyed describing his exceptional talents and summarizing his amazing career in this article.
