Weiqiang Zhao et al.

Summary: The study conducted sampling and dissolved organic matter (DOM) mixing experiments in the Jiulong River estuary (JRE) and found that deposition inputs from soil and atmospheric deposition play a role in estuarine dissolved black carbon (DBC). The composition and concentration of DBC were primarily controlled by mixing, but photodegradation and particle adsorption/flocculation may also contribute to its removal.

Levels and drivers of urban black carbon and health risk assessment during pre- and COVID19 lockdown in Augsburg, Germany

Xiansheng Liu et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the levels and phenomenology of equivalent black carbon (eBC) in Augsburg, Germany, and assessed its potential health risk based on equivalent numbers of passively smoked cigarettes (PSC), with a focus on the impact of COVID-19 lockdown measures. The study found that peak concentrations of eBC occurred during morning and night rush hours, influenced by traffic and meteorological factors. The eBC concentration decreased by an average of 35% on weekends due to lower traffic flow. During the COVID-19 lockdown, there was a significant reduction in eBC concentration due to reduced traffic flow.

Radical chemistry of dissolved black carbon under sunlight irradiation: quantum yield prediction and effects on sulfadiazine photodegradation

Yina Tu et al.

Summary: The study found a linear relationship between spectral parameters and reactive intermediate quantum yields, allowing for the prediction of RI generation from DBC under solar irradiation. Experimentation with DBC showed that DBC-D-3* was the primary active species for the indirect photodegradation of sulfadiazine. Further research revealed a linear relationship between the indirect photodegradation ability of sulfadiazine induced by DBC-D-3* at different temperatures and the DBC-D-3* quantum yields or E-2/E-3.

Effect of ageing on biochar properties and pollutant management

Yuyan Liu et al.

Summary: Biochar is a versatile environmental material used for carbon sequestration, soil amendment, and pollutant management. However, long-term exposure to soil can lead to natural weathering of biochar, impacting its properties and functionality. The influence of soil components on biochar aging remains understudied. It has been found that aged biochar with reduced ash content inhibits heavy metal adsorption, while the loss of aromatic components and formation of three-dimensional water clusters during aging negatively affect the adsorption of organic pollutants by high-temperature biochar. Therefore, caution should be exercised when using high-ash biochar for heavy metals and high-temperature biochar for organic pollutants in long-term soil remediation.

The chemical structure characteristics of dissolved black carbon and their binding with phenanthrene

Quan Chen et al.

Summary: This study investigates the binding of dissolved black carbon (DBC) with phenanthrene (Phen) through fluorescence quenching experiments. It was found that low concentrations of DBC can complex with high amounts of Phen per unit mass, while no significant difference was observed in the amount of bound Phen per unit amount of DBC at higher concentrations. The dominant mechanisms involved in this binding process include hydrophobic interactions, 7C-7C electron donor-acceptor (EDA), and chemical partition.

Coupling band structure and oxidation-reduction potential to expound photodegradation performance difference of biochar-derived dissolved black carbon for organic pollutants under light irradiation

Ying Guo et al.

Summary: The difference in photodegradation performance of rice straw biochar-derived dissolved black carbon (DBC) for Tetracycline and Methylene Blue under visible light irradiation has been investigated. Tetracycline is more easily degraded by DBC compared to Methylene Blue. Singlet oxygen (O-1(2)), superoxide radicals (center dot O-2(-)), holes (h(+)), and triplet DBC ((DBC)-D-3*) contribute to the degradation of Tetracycline by DBC, while only singlet oxygen (O-1(2)), superoxide radicals (center dot O-2(-)), and (DBC)-D-3* are involved in the degradation of Methylene Blue by DBC. Tetracycline is more easily oxidized and Methylene Blue is more easily reduced. The interaction between DBC and Tetracycline is stronger compared to the interaction between DBC and Methylene Blue.

Aggregate-associated soil organic carbon dynamics as affected by erosion and deposition along contrasting hillslopes in the Chinese Corn Belt

Summary: Soil erosion and deposition processes significantly influence the distribution and composition of soil organic carbon (SOC), leading to spatially heterogeneous patterns in SOC quantity and composition. Erosion-induced redistribution of fine particles elevates clay + silt content and increases SOC concentration at the Bottom-slope positions, highlighting the importance of soil aggregation and its interactions with erosion processes in governing SOC dynamics. The study emphasizes the need for targeted conservation practices to prevent excessive SOC loss in eroding landscapes, showing the critical role of pedogenesis in soil aggregation and SOC storage.
