Cation-responsive cavity expansion of valinomycin revealed by cryogenic ion trap infrared spectroscopy

Keisuke Hirata et al.

Summary: Valinomycin (VM) is a natural ionophore that selectively transports K+ ions across the cell membrane. While VM has high affinity for Rb+ and Cs+ ions, it shows lower affinity for sodium (Na+). By flexibly changing its cavity size, VM is able to accommodate larger Rb+ and Cs+ ions, contrary to the expected size matching model. These findings provide new insights into ion selectivity and molecular recognition beyond conventional models.

Tunnelling measured in a very slow ion-molecule reaction

Robert Wild et al.

Summary: Quantum tunnelling reactions are challenging to calculate and difficult to identify experimentally. However, in this study, accurate calculations and high-sensitivity measurements were conducted to determine the rate constant of a gas-phase proton-transfer tunnelling reaction. The measured value agrees with quantum tunnelling calculations, providing a benchmark for molecular theory and advancing the understanding of collision processes.

Numerical analysis of pulsed extraction of ions from a 16-Pole / 16-Wire ion trap for time-of-flight mass spectrometry

Nandana Pattathadathil et al.

Summary: In this work, numerical simulations were conducted to analyze the extraction characteristics of biomolecular ions stored in 16-pole and 16-wire ion traps. The results show that the ions extracted from a wire trap with a simple upgrade exhibit time-of-flight distributions two orders of magnitude narrower than that typically results from conventional ion traps. Furthermore, the upgraded design allows the ions to be confined within a much narrower region, making it compatible with fluorescence spectroscopy measurements due to higher optical access of the wire trap configuration.

An ion mobility mass spectrometer coupled with a cryogenic ion trap for recording electronic spectra of charged, isomer-selected clusters

Jack T. Buntine et al.

Summary: Infrared and electronic spectra are crucial for understanding the properties of charged molecules and clusters in the gas phase. However, the interpretation of spectra can be complicated by the presence of isomers. In this study, an instrument is described that allows for the spectroscopic characterization of charged molecular clusters based on their isomeric form and mass-to-charge ratio.

Low-temperature nitrogen-bearing polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon formation routes validated by infrared spectroscopy

Daniel B. Rap et al.

Summary: This study reveals an efficient formation pathway from monocyclic aromatic hydrocarbons to nitrogen-bearing polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (N-PAHs) at low temperatures. The experimental approach combines kinetics with spectroscopic probing and identifies key reaction intermediates and the final nitrogen-containing PAH product. The results have implications for the chemistry of the interstellar medium and Titan's atmosphere, as well as the development of astrochemical models and infrared observations.

Laser-Induced Fluorescence (LIF) Spectroscopy of Trapped Molecular Ions in the Gas Phase

Hemanth Dinesan et al.

Summary: This review focuses on the development of laser-induced fluorescence (LIF) spectroscopy for trapped gas-phase molecular ions. It summarizes the current state-of-the-art techniques used for intrinsic fluorescence measurement and discusses the challenges and potential solutions for gas-phase ion experiments. The review suggests that borrowing measurement schemes from condensed-phase experiments and improving the signal-to-noise ratio by utilizing high-finesse optical cavities and high numerical aperture collection optics could greatly enhance the detection of weak gas-phase fluorescence emission.

A sub-4 Kelvin radio frequency linear multipole wire trap

Katharina Geistlinger et al.

Summary: A linear cryogenic 16-pole wire ion trap has been developed for ion spectroscopy below 4 K, offering temperature variability, operation with different buffer gases, and large optical access. The trap's housing geometry allows temperature measurement during radio frequency operation. Time-of-flight mass spectra of multiple helium tagged protonated glycine ions extracted from the trap show low ion temperatures and suitable conditions for sensitive spectroscopy.

Numerical simulations of storage and thermometry of small biomolecular ions in a 16-pole ion trap and a 16-wire ion trap

Gayathry Rajeevan et al.

Summary: This study focused on numerical simulations of ion dynamics of small biomolecular ions in a 16-pole ion trap and a 16-wire ion trap under the influence of elastic collisions with a buffer gas. The comparison of effective potentials in these trap configurations was provided, with particular emphasis on storage efficiency and ion temperature. It was found that while the wire trap has a limited optimum operating range for storage efficiency compared to the pole trap, it can serve as a practical alternative with proper choice of operating parameters and lateral optical access for spectroscopic studies.
