X-ray magnetic circular dichroism spectroscopy at the Fe L edges with a picosecond laser-driven plasma source

Martin Borchert et al.

Summary: Time-resolved x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) provides a unique spectroscopic technique to study spin and charge dynamics in multi-elemental magnetic materials. However, its application in the soft-x-ray range has been limited. Our development of a laser-driven plasma source combined with a magnetic thin-film polarizer enables XMCD spectroscopy at the Fe L edges in a laser laboratory for the first time. This approach can be extended to other absorption edges and allows for ultrafast magnetization studies with temporal resolution of < 10 ps.

Soft X-ray characterization of halide perovskite film by scanning transmission X-ray microscopy

Haeyeon Jun et al.

Summary: Organic-inorganic metal halide perovskites (MHPs) have attracted attention for their application in optoelectronic devices. However, the fundamental mechanisms in perovskite solar cells (PSCs) are poorly understood. In this study, synchrotron-based soft X-ray characterization was used for the compositional analysis of MHP thin films. The technique, known as scanning transmission X-ray microscopy (STXM), showed high sensitivity to chemical composition and homogeneity in MHPs. The utility of STXM for analyzing physical and chemical phenomena in PSCs was highlighted.

Towards Understanding Excited-State Properties of Organic Molecules Using Time-Resolved Soft X-ray Absorption Spectroscopy

Holger Stiel et al.

Summary: This paper introduces a method that extends the pump-probe approach known by UV/VIS spectroscopy to very short wavelengths, allowing for a detailed analysis of excited-state dynamics in organic molecules or biomolecular structures with advanced simulation techniques. Through studying two experimental setups for transient soft X-ray absorption spectroscopy, optically dark states, exciton dynamics, or transient ligand-to-metal charge transfer states can be detected and characterized.

UDKM1DSIM-a Python toolbox for simulating 1D ultrafast dynamics in condensed matter

Daniel Schick

Summary: UDKM1DSIM toolbox is a collection of Python classes and routines for simulating thermal, structural, and magnetic dynamics, as well as X-ray scattering response in one-dimensional samples. It allows defining arbitrary layered structures on the atomic level and includes a rich database of physical properties. Specific magnetic dynamics can be easily implemented by the user using a generalized magnetization interface class.

Laser-driven resonant magnetic soft-x-ray scattering for probing ultrafast antiferromagnetic and structural dynamics

Daniel Schick et al.

Summary: Time-resolved resonant magnetic scattering in the soft-x-ray range is a powerful technique for studying spin dynamics in magnetic materials, but has been limited by the demand for photons and access to large-scale facilities. This study presents the development of a lab-based instrument capable of providing high-energy soft x-rays with sufficient photon flux and sub-10 ps temporal resolution for magnetism research.

Ultrafast NEXAFS spectroscopy in the lab using laser-based sources and advanced X-ray optics

Holger Stiel et al.

Summary: Laboratory based laser driven short pulse X-ray sources such as laser produced plasmas (LPP) and high harmonic generation (HHG) show great potential for spectroscopy in the soft X-ray range, crucial for time-resolved X-ray absorption spectroscopy. The photon flux available depends strongly on energy, pulse duration and repetition rate of the pump laser. The development of new X-ray sources and high photon flux HHG systems based on CPA and thin disk laser technology offers high resolution optical solutions for time-resolved experiments in the lab.
