Design of compliant mechanisms based on compliant building elements. Part I: Principles

Design and optimization of a new large stroke micropositioner based on cricket-mimicked bistable mechanism for potential application in polishing

Summary: This article proposes an optimal design of a new micropositioner based on the cricket-mimicked bistable mechanism to overcome the limited stroke of existing stages. The proposed design achieves a large stroke with centimeter range through the combination of bistable mechanism and positive-stiffness mechanism. A hybrid optimization approach is used to solve the objective functions and constraints, combining fuzzy logic, teaching learning-based optimization (TLBO), and artificial neural network (ANN). The influences of geometrical parameters on the micropositioner performance qualities are also investigated. The experimental results demonstrate the feasibility and reliability of the TLBO-assisted ANN optimization, with a potential application in various fields due to the achieved large output stroke.

Design of compliant mechanisms based on compliant building elements. Part II: Practice

Summary: In Part II, the Compliant Building Elements (CBE) method is introduced for generating practical designs of multiple degree-of-freedom (DOF) compliant mechanisms. A library of compliant mechanisms is created based on the combination of prismatic beams, containing commonly used basic elements (BEs), serial elements (SEs), and parallel elements (PEs). Through examples, the design processes of a six-axis nanopositioner, a compliant steering mechanism, and a one-dimensional mechanical metamaterial structure are demonstrated using the library and CBE method. Each design yields a flexure topology that meets requirements and corresponding stiffness and compliance matrices for kinematic characteristics and stiffness optimization in selected axes.

Integratable micro-optical compound objective lens using soft lithography

Modular quasi-zero-stiffness isolator based on compliant constant-force mechanisms for low-frequency vibration isolation

Summary: In this paper, a rigid-flexible coupling quasi-zero-stiffness (QZS) vibration isolator with high-static-low-dynamic stiffness (HSLDS) characteristics is proposed. The QZS isolator is achieved by combining a compliant constant-force mechanism of diamond-shape mechanism and a nonlinear bi-stable beam in parallel. Analytical models and finite element analysis are used to evaluate the isolator's performance and identify optimal design parameters. The results show that the QZS isolator effectively isolates low-frequency vibrations.

Design of a precise positioning stage actuated by a double-layer stick-slip actuator used for precise assembly

Enhancing Dynamic Bandwidth of Amplified Piezoelectric Actuators by a Hybrid Lever and Bridge-Type Compliant Mechanism

Experimental evaluation shows that this APA has high resonance frequency, displacement amplification ratio, and response speed, with a compact size. Additionally, a comprehensive two-port dynamic stiffness model is developed to predict the static and dynamic behaviors of the compliant amplifier.

Analytical modelling and experiments for hybrid multiaxis flexure hinges

Summary: Hybrid multiaxis flexure hinges with a generalized elliptical-arc hybrid fillet (EAHF) notch contour were developed and investigated in this study. Analytical equations for compliance, rotational precision, and maximum stress under combined loads were formulated and verified through finite element analysis and experiments. A parameter study on the effects of the hybrid filleted notch revealed that the rotation center and shearing compliance of the hinges changed while the rotational compliance remained largely unaffected. The presented EAHF contour provides a generalized model for designing hybrid multiaxis flexure hinges, and the developed analytical equations are sufficient for quick and systematic evaluation of hinge performance.
