Domain wall memory: Physics, materials, and devices

Durgesh Kumar et al.

Summary: Digital data generated by corporate and individual users is growing due to the use of digital applications. While flash memory devices are replacing HDDs in certain applications, HDDs still dominate the storage of digital data in cloud and servers. Domain wall memory (DWM) is a potential alternative to HDDs, offering lower power consumption and higher storage capacity. However, there are challenges to be addressed before DWM can become commercially viable.

Ultrafast perturbation of magnetic domains by optical pumping in a ferromagnetic multilayer

Dmitriy Zusin et al.

Summary: In this study, the laser-induced dynamics of labyrinth domain networks in ferromagnetic CoFe/Ni multilayers were investigated using ultrafast x-ray diffraction. It was observed that the amplitudes of the magnetic diffraction rings decreased to different degrees within a short period of time and the rings also broadened and contracted radially. By analyzing the diffraction rings using Fourier analysis, the broadening of the domain walls was quantitatively determined. These findings provide important evidence for understanding the dynamics of labyrinth domain structures under far-from-equilibrium conditions.

Observation of fluctuation-mediated picosecond nucleation of a topological phase

Felix Buettner et al.

Summary: Time-resolved X-ray scattering was used to demonstrate the ultrafast 300 ps topological phase transition to a skyrmionic phase, mediated by the formation of a transient topological fluctuation state. The emergence of an extended topological phase containing many magnetic skyrmions was observed within picoseconds, with the nucleation process mediated by the transient topological fluctuation state induced by a time-reversal symmetry-breaking perpendicular magnetic field.
