Technical, Economic, and Environmental Comparison of Closed- Loop Recycling Technologies for Common Plastics

Taylor Uekert et al.

Summary: Over 400 million metric tons of plastic waste are generated globally each year, resulting in pollution and lost resources. Recycling strategies can recapture this wasted material, but there is a lack of quantitative and transparent data on the capabilities and impacts of these processes. The study develops a dataset for closed-loop polymer recycling technologies, including mechanical recycling and solvent-based dissolution of various types of plastic, to compare their economic and environmental performances, as well as material qualities. Mechanical recycling and PET glycolysis showed the best performance in terms of economic and environmental aspects, while dissolution and enzymatic hydrolysis provided the highest material qualities. The study also identified key process contributors and highlighted future research areas.

Efficient separation of precious metals from computer waste printed circuit boards by hydrocyclone and dilution-gravity methods

Mohammad Reza Bilesan et al.

Summary: A novel physical separation method, including multiple steps such as sieving, hydrocyclone, and dilution-gravity method, was proposed to effectively recover precious metals from waste printed circuit boards. Through experiments and analysis, it was demonstrated that the method achieved efficient recovery of gold, palladium, silver, and copper.

Removing Acrylic Conformal Coating with Safer Solvents for Re-Manufacturing Electronics

Taofeng Lu et al.

Summary: Conformal coating, typically composed of polymeric film, is used to protect delicate electronic components such as printed-circuit boards. Methylene chloride is commonly used in the coating removal process, but its high toxicity poses risks to human health. This research evaluated alternative chemicals for safer removal of acrylic conformal coating, demonstrating equivalent performance at an acceptable cost range.
