Untargeted and Targeted Blood Lipidomic Signature Profile of Gestational Alcohol Exposure

Vishal D. Naik et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of alcohol on lipid levels in pregnant rats, particularly in the context of fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD). The results suggest that alcohol can induce dysregulation of lipids in the maternal blood, providing insights into possible mechanisms underlying FASD.

Assessing the sensitivity and specificity of phosphatidylethanol (PEth) cutoffs to identify alcohol exposed pregnancies

Julie M. Hasken et al.

Summary: There is debate in the literature regarding the appropriate cutoff levels for alcohol biomarkers in research applications. This study assessed the sensitivity and specificity of different cutoff values for the alcohol biomarker PEth in pregnant women, comparing it to self-report, AUDIT scores, and EtG. The results found that less stringent cutoffs, such as PEth >= 8 ng/ml, may be valid for identifying alcohol consumption during pregnancy, while a cutoff of PEth >= 20 ng/ml may miss individuals who consume alcohol (false negatives).

Gestational weight gain and dietary energy, iron, and choline intake predict severity of fetal alcohol growth restriction in a prospective birth cohort

R. Colin Carter et al.

Summary: The study found that gestational weight gain and dietary intakes of energy, choline, and iron can modify fetal vulnerability to prenatal alcohol exposure related growth restriction. Screening programs for pregnant women at higher risk of having a child with FASD are needed to identify alcohol-using women who could benefit from nutritional interventions.

Effects of nutrition and gestational alcohol consumption on fetal growth and development

Vishal D. Naik et al.

Summary: Fetal alcohol exposure can lead to developmental disorders, and inadequate nutrition can worsen these effects. This review explores the interaction between nutrition and gestational alcohol consumption on fetal growth and development, as well as the potential benefits of micronutrient supplementation.

Untargeted Metabolome Analysis Reveals Reductions in Maternal Hepatic Glucose and Amino Acid Content That Correlate with Fetal Organ Weights in a Mouse Model of Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders

Nipun Saini et al.

Summary: Prenatal alcohol exposure can cause fetal growth restrictions. Alcohol affects maternal metabolism, limiting glucose availability and resulting in changes in metabolic products, which may impact fetal weight.

The prevalence of fetal alcohol spectrum disorders in rural communities in South Africa: A third regional sample of child characteristics and maternal risk factors

Philip A. May et al.

Summary: This study is the ninth cross-sectional community study on fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD) conducted in the Western Cape Province of South Africa. The results showed that FASD remains a significant problem in this region, but the severity of physical traits and anomalies within the FASD continuum is trending downwards.

Dietary Intake Patterns and Lifestyle Behaviors of Pregnant Women Living in a Manitoba First Nations Community: Implications for Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder

Olena Kloss et al.

Summary: This study investigated the nutrition status, dietary intake, and lifestyle patterns of pregnant women at-risk and non-at-risk in a northern Manitoban community. Significant differences were found in the intake of vitamin C, niacin, folate, and iron between at-risk and non-at-risk women.

Untargeted Metabolome Analysis of Alcohol-Exposed Pregnancies Reveals Metabolite Differences That Are Associated with Infant Birth Outcomes

Julie M. Hasken et al.

Summary: Prenatal alcohol exposure can lead to offspring growth deficits and neurodevelopmental disabilities. Using untargeted metabolomics, this study found that alcohol consumption was associated with reduced levels of sphingomyelins, cholesterol, pregnenolones, and increased levels of fatty acids, acyl and amino acyl carnitines, and androsterones. Additionally, certain metabolites, including monoacylglycerols and glycerol-3-phosphate, were associated with negative outcomes for infant length, weight, and head circumference, implicating their role in fetal development.

The prevalence, child characteristics, and maternal risk factors for the continuum of fetal alcohol spectrum disorders: A sixth population-based study in the same South African community

Philip A. May et al.

Summary: The study found that children with fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD) differed significantly from controls in dysmorphology and neurobehavioral aspects. Risk factors for FASD included maternal characteristics, education level, household income, and alcohol consumption during pregnancy. Some risk factors may make women more likely to have children with FASD.

Global metabolomic profiling reveals hepatic biosignatures that reflect the unique metabolic needs of late-term mother and fetus

Nipun Saini et al.

Summary: Gestational disorders are characterized by altered metabolic interactions between mother and fetus, with fetal metabolism under distinct and tightly controlled regulation compared to the dam. The metabolite profiles reflect different metabolic needs in the fetus, with contributions to energy demands and growth. The late-term mouse serves as a suitable model for investigating how maternal-fetal metabolism adapts to gestational stressors.
