Tailorable bandgap-dependent selective emitters for thermophotovoltaic systems

X. J. Liu et al.

Summary: Selective emitters are crucial for thermophotovoltaic (TPV) systems as they enhance system efficiency by tailoring incident light to match with the bandgap of photovoltaic (PV) cells. This study proposes a design strategy based on metasurfaces to achieve tailorable bandgap-dependent selective emitters, improving the performance of TPV systems.

Shiquan Shan et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the near-field thermo-photovoltaics (NFTPV) system from the energy perspective and proposes a novel oxy-enrich NFTPV system. A thermo-physical model is established for sustainable fuel gas based on energy balance. Numerical analysis is conducted to explore the effects of various parameters on system performance. The results show that the oxy-enrich NFTPV system has higher efficiency and power density compared to the far-field TPV system, which is significant in engineering practice.

Summary: Matching thermal radiation power spectrum to photovoltaic cell band gap is crucial for thermophotovoltaic system efficiency. Low radiation outside of the operating spectrum reduces energy waste. This study designed a hexahedral thermophotovoltaic system and measured the effect of surface emissivity on temperature distribution. The results showed consistent trends between simulation and experiment, providing a basis for more efficient thermophotovoltaic system design.

Sustaining efficiency at elevated power densities in InGaAs airbridge thermophotovoltaic cells

Bosun Roy-Layinde et al.

Summary: Recent research has shown that although the thermophotovoltaic efficiency of thin-film InGaAs cells is record-high, the power density of devices remains low. Effective heat and charge carrier management is necessary to increase power densities. This study investigates the use of single-junction InGaAs air bridge cells (ABCs) under such conditions and develops a predictive device model based on experimental characterization. The model identifies opportunities for improving performance and maximizes overall power output by designing a thermal management strategy. The results show that an InGaAs ABC with high material quality can achieve peak efficiencies of -41% at 0.5 W/cm2, with efficiencies above 36% sustained up to 1.5 W/cm2 after considering the power required for cooling the cells.

Numerical modeling and performance enhancement of micro combustor powered thermophotovoltaic systems using high contrast gratings

M. V. N. Surendra Gupta et al.

Summary: Thermophotovoltaic (TPV) systems directly convert thermal energy into electricity using high temperature source radiation. By employing high contrast grating (HCG) structures as selective filters, TPVs can suppress sub-band gap radiation and achieve higher power density. Studies show that TPV systems with low bandgap PV cells can have over 20 times higher power density compared to conventional silicon PV cells.

Efficient annular aperture array (AAA) filter for thermophotovoltaic by sidewall lithography

Maoqi Cai et al.

Summary: Thermophotovoltaic (TPV) systems can benefit from filters to improve energy conversion efficiency. The use of annular aperture array filters allows for spectral control and heat insulation, with smaller sizes leading to higher efficiency. A cost-effective fabrication method using conventional interference lithography and ion-beam etching has been proposed. After annealing, the peak transmittance of the filter increases and no deformation is observed in the structural parameters.
