Solar desalination chimneys: Investigation on the feasibility of integrating solar chimneys with humidification-dehumidification systems

Mahyar Abedi et al.

Summary: The feasibility of integrating a solar chimney with a humidification-dehumidification desalination system is examined in this study. The proposed system uses solar energy to create hot air that moves through a humidification and dehumidification system. Results show that a large-scale solar chimney power plant could efficiently operate with a turbine providing power to the desalination system and supplying freshwater for over 800 households. Moreover, small-scale integrated solar chimney desalination systems placed on residential building roofs can produce about 600 liters of freshwater daily for a household's needs.

Energetic and exergetic analyses of a closed-loop pressure retarded membrane distillation (PRMD) for low-grade thermal energy utilization and freshwater production

Min Seok Lee et al.

Summary: A closed-loop pressure-retarded membrane distillation (PRMD) system with thermo-osmotic energy conversion (TOEC) is proposed for simultaneous desalination and power generation. Mathematical modeling and energetic/exergetic analyses are performed to evaluate the feasibility and energy efficiency of the system. The results show that the closed-loop PRMD system requires the lowest heat input and increases the electrical energy production compared with existing processes. Furthermore, water and electrical energy can be produced simultaneously, making it a promising solution for desalination and energy harvesting from low-grade thermal energy.

Beneficiation of saline effluents from seawater desalination plants: Fostering the zero liquid discharge (ZLD) approach - A techno-economic evaluation

Argyris Panagopoulos

Summary: Zero liquid discharge (ZLD) and utilizing saline effluents for resource recovery have attracted interest recently. A research study presented two different ZLD systems to utilize brine by recovering freshwater and solid salts with commercial value. The results showed that while system 2 had higher specific energy consumption and freshwater cost than system 1, it was more profitable due to increased revenue from pure NaCl production. Both systems were even profitable solely from selling freshwater, demonstrating their promising potential for sustainable brine management and utilization.
