On the wake deflection of vertical axis wind turbines by pitched blades

Ming Huang et al.

Summary: Wake losses are important considerations in wind farm design. The ability to control the direction and deformation of wakes can increase power density and reduce energy costs, optimizing wind farm designs. This study experimentally investigates the deflection of wakes from a vertical axis wind turbine (VAWT), specifically focusing on the impact of different load distributions on wake convection and mixing.

Performance assessment of an innovative Gurney flap for straight-bladed vertical axis wind turbine

Qingsong Liu et al.

Summary: This study investigates the combined impact of cavity vortex trapping capability and Gurney Flap (GF) on the aerodynamic efficiency of the straight-bladed vertical axis wind turbine (SB-VAWT). An active flow control technique using a pivoting GF is proposed to eliminate flow resistance caused by GF in the windward zone. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation shows that the movable cavity-GF significantly increases the power coefficient by more than 20% compared to the fixed cavity-GF.

Estimation of blade loads for a variable pitch Vertical Axis Wind Turbine with strain gage measurements

Bruce LeBlanc et al.

Summary: The blade pitch angle of a Vertical Axis Wind Turbine significantly affects its aerodynamic loading and performance. Experimental measurements with fixed pitch offsets in a wind tunnel provide insights into the sensitivity of turbine loading to blade pitch angle. Changes in the blade pitch alter the normal loading of the rotor, causing variations in rotor thrust. The data obtained also reveals the aerodynamic phenomena associated with VAWTs, including dynamic stall and blade vortex interaction.

Investigation of pitch angles on the aerodynamics of twin-VAWT under staggered arrangement

Yaoran Chen et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effect of pitch angles on the aerodynamic performance of twin vertical axis wind turbines (VAWTs) under staggered arrangements. Computational fluid dynamics is used to simulate the changes in power coefficients of the twin rotors. The study finds that the pitch angle of one rotor can affect the performance of both itself and the other rotor. The largest difference in power performance is found to be 4.79% for the upstream rotor and 7.04% for the downstream one. The study also comprehensively analyzes the aerodynamic mechanism through comparisons of velocity, vorticity, and pressure fields. The findings provide suggestions for the design of twin-VAWT systems.

Estimation of blade loads for a variable pitch vertical axis wind turbine from particle image velocimetry

Bruce LeBlanc et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the flow fields and aerodynamic loading of a two-bladed H-type vertical axis wind turbine with active variable pitch for load and circulation control. Using Particle Image Velocimetry, flow fields at different azimuthal positions of the blades during operation were captured, providing insight into phenomena such as dynamic stall and tower shadow. The results demonstrate the impact of load shifting from the upwind to downwind region using pitch control, as well as the effects of dynamic stall on the blades, while also serving as a unique database for model validation.

Numerical model of vertical axis wind turbine performance in realistic gusty wind conditions

Omid Atlaschian et al.

Summary: This study aims to estimate the performance of a Vertical Axis Wind Turbine (VAWT) in urban/suburban areas over a full year and predict the Levelized Cost of Energy (LCOE) in comparison to national electricity prices through numerical strategies. Wind speed data from Oklahoma City were used for input, and three numerical models including CFD, BEM, and a transient response model were implemented. Results indicate that the LCOE of VAWT can be equal to or lower than the national average electricity price under specific wind speed conditions.

A method of reducing the radial load of the shaft of a vertical axis wind turbine based on movable mass blocks

Lijun Zhang et al.

Summary: This study proposes an active control method using movable mass blocks to reduce fatigue failure caused by unsteady loads on the shaft of large VAWT. The optimized mass blocks can significantly reduce radial load and deformation of the shaft without affecting the power output of the wind turbine. Further research indicates that the active control method prolongs start-up time, prompting the proposal of adjusting wind turbine inertia to save start-up time.
