Performance investigation of a biomimetic latent heat thermal energy storage device for waste heat recovery in data centers

Yongping Huang et al.

Summary: To improve the power usage efficiency of data centers, a single-phase immersion cooling system with palmate leaf-shaped fins for latent heat thermal energy storage (LHTES) is proposed. The phase change behavior and thermal transport patterns of biomimetic and traditional LHTES devices are investigated, revealing the effects of arrangement and working conditions. The results show that the performance of palmate leaf-shaped finned LHTES devices is significantly enhanced compared to traditional ones, with reduced charge and discharge durations.

Hydrodynamic influence on thermal management of flexible heatsink devices embedded with out-of-plane intricate microchannel design

Win-Jet Luo et al.

Summary: This study compares the thermal management efficacy of a 3-D printed microfluidic heat sink device with an intricate microchannel design to a device with a rectangular microchannel. The results showed that the device made from nanocomposite material and featuring an intricate 3D design achieved the lowest hotspot temperature at a relatively low flow rate, but at a higher flow rate, PDMS-based devices with intricate channels performed better. Numerical simulation revealed that high flow rates created vortices, significantly altering the heat transfer characteristics. The proposed device has potential applications in electronic cooling, battery thermal management, 3D-printer nozzle heads, and artificial organ cooling.

Energy, exergy and economic analysis of ceramic foam-enhanced molten salt as phase change material for medium- and high-temperature thermal energy storage

Shuai Zhang et al.

Summary: This study conducted a comprehensive analysis on the energy, exergy, and economic aspects of using ceramic foam/molten salt composite phase change material (CPCM) for medium-and high-temperature thermal energy storage systems. The results showed that the melting rate and energy storage rate were significantly improved with the use of ceramic foam-enhanced molten salt. The exergy efficiency of CPCMs was also higher than that of pure PCM. Additionally, the economic analysis indicated the feasibility of CPCMs with certain porosities within a certain price range. This study is of great importance for the large-scale application of ceramic foam in thermal energy storage.

Evaluation of different melting performance enhancement structures in a shell-and-tube latent heat thermal energy storage system

Ruihuan Ge et al.

Summary: This study numerically investigates two principal thermal enhancement techniques, finned tubes and conductive metal foams, in a phase change energy storage system. The simulation predictions are validated by experimental results with topology optimized fins. The results show that compared to the configuration without enhancement, the thermal energy storage rates can be increased by 3.3-5.8 times using these thermal enhancement techniques. It is found that topology optimized fins achieve the best performance, but their economic efficiency is dependent on the unit price ratio.

Thermal performance of latent heat energy storage system with/without enhancement under solar fluctuation for Organic Rankine power cycle

Shuai Zhang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the energy storage characteristics of a shell-and-tube system containing molten salt as phase change material with/without ceramic foam enhancement under solar fluctuation. The results show that solar radiation has a significant impact on the total stored energy, with intense solar radiation accelerating the energy storage rate and oscillating solar radiation resulting in the least total stored energy. The ceramic foam-enhanced molten salt is more sensitive to solar fluctuation and can improve the total stored energy.

Shuai Zhang et al.

Summary: In this study, a composite phase change material (PCM) was developed by combining porous silicon carbide (SiC) ceramic with solar salt for enhanced heat transfer and corrosion resistance in molten salts. The composite PCM showed a more uniform temperature distribution and increased overall phase change rate. The SiC ceramics demonstrated excellent corrosion resistance compared to commonly used thermal promoters. The composite PCM has the potential for large-scale applications due to its simple preparation, low cost, and easy maintenance.

A review of phase change heat transfer in shape-stabilized phase change materials (ss-PCMs) based on porous supports for thermal energy storage

Shuai Zhang et al.

Summary: Latent heat thermal energy storage (LHTES) using phase change materials (PCMs) is effective in addressing energy supply-demand mismatch, but faces challenges of low thermal conductivity and leakage. Integrating porous supports and PCMs to fabricate shape-stabilized phase change materials (ss-PCMs) is one solution, with research on phase change heat transfer in porous ss-PCMs being crucial for system performance evaluation. Research gaps exist between phase change heat transfer and material preparation, and future studies should focus on numerical advancements and experimental investigations in this area.
