Corporate reactions to the fracturing of the global economy

Peter J. Buckley

Summary: This paper postulates a deep and long-term fracture in the global economy and examines the impact of policy-induced changes on corporate strategies. It argues that significant corporate responses are overdue and predicts that this will bring about new modes of international management.

Wind and solar generation may reduce the inter-annual variability of peak residual load in certain electricity systems

H. Tyler Ruggles et al.

Summary: This study examines the variability of peak residual load in electricity systems with the addition of variable renewable power sources, such as wind and solar. It suggests that the inter-annual variability in peak residual load may decrease with added solar generation during summer peak load periods, due to correlations between solar availability and peak electric load usage for air conditioning. Additionally, the inter-annual variability in peak residual load may decrease with added wind generation in systems with a winter peaking load.

Mathematical modeling of the thermochemical processes of sequestration of SOx when burning the particles of the coal and wood mixture

S. Syrodoy et al.

Summary: The article presents the results of mathematical modeling of the initial stage of wood and coal particle combustion in boiler units of thermal power plants. The study demonstrates the possibility of intensifying the sequestration of sulfur oxides by moistening the wood component, leading to environmentally efficient coal combustion.

Drying characteristics of two capillary porous building materials: Calcium silicate and ceramic brick

Jianhua Zhao et al.

Summary: In this paper, the drying behaviors of calcium silicate and ceramic brick were experimentally and numerically investigated. Approaches to determine the drying rates and descriptive parameters were proposed, and the drying coefficient was shown to describe the drying ability of porous building materials. Numerical simulation provided a better understanding of the coupled heat and moisture transfer phenomena during the drying process.

An improved kinetic modelling of woody biomass gasification in a downdraft reactor based on the pyrolysis gas evolution

Karim Rabea et al.

Summary: A new enhanced model for gasification process in downdraft reactor is proposed in this study, offering a more realistic representation of the pyrolysis stage. The simulation results are in good agreement with experimental data, enabling the model to be used for predicting the performance of a gasifier at different load levels.

Oil price changes, uncertainty, and geopolitical risks: On the resilience of GCC countries to global tensions

Abdullah Alqahtani et al.

Summary: The study reveals that the stock markets of Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries are influenced in the long run by oil prices, price uncertainty, and geopolitical risks, with most member states showing resilience to global geopolitical risks except for Qatar. Local geopolitical events have a more significant impact on GCC member countries.

From single to multi-energy and hybrid grids: Historic growth and future vision

J. Ramsebner et al.

Summary: Interaction between different energy carriers such as electricity, heat, and gas is considered beneficial for using renewable energy and reducing carbon emissions. The establishment of hybrid grids or systems, also known as multi-, integrated, or smart energy systems, is relatively unexplored. The complexity of this concept challenges the common isolated view of energy grids.

R. Shreelavaniya et al.

Summary: The study showed that both the indirect active solar-biomass hybrid dryer (SBHD) and biomass mode are suitable for drying small cardamom, but SBHD has higher drying efficiency, better color retention, and higher content of oleoresin and volatile oil compared to the biomass mode.

Arkasama Bandyopadhyay et al.

Summary: The study shows that residential customers can reduce overall annual expenditure and environmental footprint by investing in solar panels and smart thermostats. However, the capital costs of both storage systems are currently too high to be economically profitable. Lithium-ion batteries are recommended as the main instruments to avoid high demand charges.

Features of the processes of heat and mass transfer when drying a large thickness layer of wood biomass

G. Kuznetsov et al.

Summary: The study found that nonuniform temperature fields are formed in the layer of moist wood biomass due to the influence of heat and mass transfer processes, leading to local cooling of the biomass. A physical model of heat and mass transfer processes in the porous structure of moist wood biomass upon heating has been formulated.

Factor analysis of the influence of environmental conditions on VOC emissions from medium density fibreboard and the correlation of the factors with fitting parameters

Huiqi Shao et al.

Summary: This study used factor analysis to investigate the impact of relative humidity (RH) and air change rate (ACR) on VOC emissions from medium density fibreboard with oil-based paint coating. It was found that RH has a positive correlation with VOC emission concentrations in the initial stage, but no significant influence in the later stage, while VOC concentrations are inversely proportional to ACR. The parameters in the emission model have power-law or polynomial relationships with ACR and RH, with ACR showing negative correlations with a parameter and positive correlations with another, resulting in a negative influence on VOC emissions.
