Influence of particle loading, Froude and Stokes number on the global thermal performance of a vortex-based solar particle receiver

Daniel Ang et al.

Summary: This study presents a joint experimental and numerical investigation of the global thermal performance of a novel windowless vortex-based cavity receiver. The research focuses on the potential thermal processing of suspended particles and evaluates the coupled influence of particle loading, Froude and Stokes number on the overall performance. The results suggest that particle volumetric loading and Froude number are the primary controlling factors for the global performance of the receiver.

Measured global thermal performance of a directly irradiated suspension-flow solar particle receiver with an open aperture

A. Chinnici et al.

Summary: An experimental investigation on the thermal performance of a 1-kW suspension-flow solar particle receiver was conducted, showing that the ratio of solar input to total heat capacity and suction level have significant impact on device performance. The heat absorbed by air was found to be 3-15 times higher than that of the solid phase, depending on operating conditions. The presence of the solid phase enhanced total heat absorption by the two-phase flow.

Direct measurements and prediction of the particle egress from a vortex-based solar cavity receiver with an open aperture

Yining Tang et al.

Summary: This study presents direct measurements and numerical predictions of particle egress from a vortex-based particle solar receiver. The study investigates the control strategy and finds that significant over-ventilation is required to mitigate particle egress. Slight over-ventilation is found to be the most significant factor in controlling particle egress.

Bottom-Up Estimates of the Cost of Supplying High-Temperature Industrial Process Heat from Intermittent Renewable Electricity and Thermal Energy Storage in Australia

Andrea Profaiser et al.

Summary: This study presents the upper and lower bounds for the levelized cost of high-temperature industrial process heat supplied by solar-photovoltaic and wind turbines. The lower bound of the cost ranges from USD 10/GJ to USD 24/GJ, while the upper bound ranges from USD 16/GJ to USD 31/GJ. None of the assessed system configurations are economically viable without a cost for CO2 emissions or a premium for low-carbon products.
