Uncovering the impact of income inequality and population aging on carbon emission efficiency: An empirical analysis of 139 countries

Qiang Wang et al.

Summary: Income inequality and carbon emission efficiency are crucial factors in achieving UN sustainable development goals. However, research on the relationship between these two factors has been lacking. This study uses panel data from 139 countries between 1998 and 2018 to explore how income inequality affects carbon emission efficiency, considering the influence of aging and economic growth. The results indicate that income inequality inhibits the improvement of carbon emission efficiency and that the relationship between income inequality and carbon emission efficiency is influenced by aging and economic growth, showing U-shaped and inverted U-shaped patterns respectively. Policy recommendations are provided based on the changes in spatial and temporal distributions.

Revisiting the environmental kuznets curve hypothesis in 208 counties: The roles of trade openness, human capital, renewable energy and natural resource rent

Qiang Wang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the impact of trade openness, human capital, renewable energy, and natural resource rent on carbon emissions within the framework of the environmental Kuznets curve hypothesis. The results show that the EKC hypothesis is validated when considering the effects of these factors. The relationship between income level and carbon emissions follows an inverted U-shaped curve, and the EKC turning point occurs at a real GDP per capita of $19,203. Renewable energy consumption and human capital have different effects on carbon emissions before and after the EKC turning point, while trade openness only mitigates carbon emissions in countries with weak decoupling after the turning point.

Accelerating urbanization serves to reduce income inequality without sacrificing energy efficiency-Evidence from the 78 countries

Qiang Wang et al.

Summary: This study examines the relationship between income inequality and energy efficiency using static and dynamic threshold effect approaches based on panel data of 78 countries. The results show a positive correlation between income inequality and energy efficiency, which weakens when urbanization and industrialization levels exceed certain thresholds. Additionally, urbanization plays a larger role than industrialization in reducing the correlation between income inequality and energy efficiency. Therefore, accelerating urbanization, particularly industrialization, can help reduce income inequality without sacrificing energy efficiency.

The role of energy consumption in global carbon intensity change: A meta-frontier-based production-theoretical decomposition analysis

Xiao Liu et al.

Summary: Energy consumption is crucial for economic development and carbon emissions. This study develops a new method to analyze the progress of carbon intensity change in 79 economies from 2007 to 2014. The findings show that developing countries with high energy consumption are more energy efficient, while high energy consumption developed countries and low energy consumption developing countries have made significant technological progress. The decrease in global carbon intensity is mainly due to the reduced potential energy intensity effect, while energy technology and efficiency gaps have contributed to an increase in carbon intensity.

The impact of energy efficiency on carbon emissions: Evidence from the transportation sector in Chinese 30 provinces

Rongrong Li et al.

Summary: Emissions from the transport sector contribute significantly to China's carbon emissions. This study examines the carbon emissions from the transportation industry in 30 Chinese provinces from 2005 to 2019 and finds that energy efficiency and urbanization have a limited inhibitory effect on carbon emissions compared to the promoting effect of income growth, private vehicles, and cargo turnover. Considering the nonlinear effects of carbon emissions is crucial for developing more effective policies to curb emissions in the transport sector.

Is decoupling embodied carbon emissions from economic output in Sino-US trade possible?

Qiang Wang et al.

Summary: The study found that the decoupling of carbon emissions embodied in China's exports to the US is relatively stable and improving, while the decoupling in US exports to China is variable. The impact of the intermediate product structure on carbon emissions in US exports to China is higher than in China's exports to the US. Certain industries in China showed strong decoupling from 2013 to 2014, while knowledge-intensive manufacturing and service industries in the US had the best decoupling effect in exports to China. The driving factors of carbon emissions in trade between China and the US are similar, but differ in intensity. This study provides insights for decoupling carbon emissions in global trade, especially between developing and developed countries.
