Achieving expanded sludge treatment capacity with additional benefits for an anaerobic digester using free ammonia pretreatment

Huan Liu et al.

Summary: Population growth has led to an increase in waste activated sludge (WAS) production, causing an urgent need for expanding sludge treatment capacity in wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). This study demonstrated that free ammonia (FA) pretreatment can expand the treatment capacity of anaerobic digesters by up to 50% through reducing sludge retention time (SRT). The FA pretreatment improved the removal of pathogens and antibiotic resistance genes, making it a promising approach for WWTPs.

Application and improvement methods of sludge alkaline fermentation liquid as a carbon source for biological nutrient removal: A review

Zehui Yin et al.

Summary: Alkaline fermentation can produce sludge alkaline fermentation liquid (SAFL) rich in short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs), which can be used as a high-quality carbon source for the biological nutrient removal (BNR) process. SAFL has advantages of higher efficiency and economy compared to traditional carbon sources, and different operating conditions affect the yield and structure of SCFAs in SAFL. SAFL significantly improves the nutrient removal efficiency of the BNR process and can solve the problems of carbon source shortage and sludge treatment difficulties in wastewater treatment plants.

Zinc pyrithione induced volatile fatty acids promotion derived from sludge anaerobic digestion: Interrelating the affected steps with microbial metabolic regulation and adaptive responses

Yuxiao Li et al.

Summary: The extensive use of zinc pyrithione (ZPT) has led to its high levels in waste activated sludge (WAS) and has impacted subsequent WAS treatment. This study demonstrated that ZPT enhanced the production of volatile fatty acids (VFAs) during WAS anaerobic digestion, while inhibiting methanogenesis. Furthermore, ZPT at low levels enriched certain hydrolytic-acidifying microorganisms but reduced methanogens. Meta-transcriptomic analysis revealed that key genes involved in hydrolysis, membrane transport, substrate metabolism, and VFAs biosynthesis were upregulated with low levels of ZPT. This work provides insights into the environmental behaviors of emerging pollutants in WAS anaerobic digestion and the interplay between microbial metabolic regulation and adaptive responses.

Microbial production of odd-chain fatty acids

Ning Qin et al.

Summary: Odd-chain fatty acids (OcFAs) and their derivatives have potential as alternatives to advanced fuels due to their beneficial physiological effects. However, cells naturally produce mainly even-chain fatty acids (EcFAs) and lack sufficient precursor for OcFA production. Synthetic biology strategies have been used to engineer microorganisms to increase precursor production and enable efficient biosynthesis of OcFAs. This review discusses metabolic pathways for precursor biosynthesis and advances in engineering cell factories for OcFA production, as well as the trends and challenges in synthetic biology-driven OcFA production.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of calcium hypochlorite on biomethane generation and found that it inhibits methane production in the acidogenic phase but enhances it in the methanogenic phase. Mechanism analysis showed that this inhibition is relieved in the methanogenic phase and functional microbes are enriched. The Ca(ClO)2-based method shows potential for large-scale applications.

Summary: Fermentation is an emerging biotechnology for transforming waste into easily assimilable organic compounds. Co-fermentation of multiple waste streams in wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) can increase the yields of sludge fermentation. The most studied variables in co-fermentation include mixing ratio, pH, and temperature. Continuous co-fermentation can be optimized by controlling temperature, pH, hydraulic retention time, and organic load. This review provides a comprehensive and critical overview of co-fermentation research and lays the foundation for future studies.

Jing Zhang et al.

Summary: The emerging pollutant Dechlorane Plus (DPs) was found to significantly inhibit waste-activated sludge anaerobic fermentation, reducing the production of short-chain fatty acids (SCFA). DPs promoted sludge disintegration but inhibited hydrolysis and acidification processes, while also suppressing the release of soluble bound extracellular polymers (SB-EPS). The microbial community analysis showed a decrease in acid-producing bacteria such as Firmicutes and Actinobacteriathe, as well as specific genera like Proteiniclasticum and Mycobacteriumwas in the presence of DPs.

Summary: The study investigated co-fermentation of waste activated sludge and food waste to produce carboxylic acids, showing higher yields compared to mono-fermentation. Co-fermentation yields increased with higher proportion of food waste in the mixture. pH played a crucial role in co-fermentation performance, with the need for a high enough proportion of sludge to maintain pH above 5.0. Fermenter conditions should prevent the enrichment of acetic acid-consuming microorganisms.
