Thymol protects against bleomycin-induced pulmonary fibrosis via abrogation of oxidative stress, inflammation, and modulation of miR-29a/TGF-β and PI3K/Akt signaling in mice

Rasha M. Hussein et al.

Summary: This study found that thymol (THY) from thyme species can inhibit oxidative stress, inflammation, and lung fibrosis-related miR-29a/TGF-beta and PI3K/phospho-Akt signaling pathways. The results showed that THY effectively alleviated pulmonary fibrosis, upregulated miR-29a expression, and downregulated TGF-beta and PI3K/Akt signaling pathways. These findings are worthy of further investigation as a possible mechanism for THY's anti-fibrotic effects.

Maackiain protects against sepsis via activating AMPK/Nrf2/HO-1 pathway

Xiaoxue Bai et al.

Summary: This study found that Maackiain, a natural compound from Sophora flavescens, protects against sepsis by reducing organ injury, inflammation, and oxidative stress. Maackiain activates the AMPK/Nrf2/HO-1 pathway, leading to its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects. Inhibition of this pathway abolishes the protective effects of Maackiain.

Arbutin attenuates LPS-induced acute kidney injury by inhibiting inflammation and apoptosis via the PI3K/Akt/Nrf2 pathway

Beibei Zhang et al.

Summary: This study demonstrated that Arbutin may inhibit LPS-induced AKI by exerting an anti-inflammatory effect and regulating the Akt signaling pathway. Experimental results showed that Arbutin significantly improved renal function, attenuated inflammation and cell apoptosis through the PI3K/Akt/Nrf2 pathway following LPS challenge in vivo, which was effectively blocked by GDC in vitro.

Thymol alleviates imidacloprid-induced testicular toxicity by modulating oxidative stress and expression of steroidogenesis and apoptosis-related genes in adult male rats

Taghred M. Saber et al.

Summary: IMI exposure in rats led to a decrease in body weight, reproductive organ weights, sperm quality, testosterone levels, and induced histological changes and apoptosis in the testis. Thymol co-administration significantly alleviated the toxic effects induced by IMI, suggesting it as a potential therapeutic option for IMI-induced reproductive toxicity.

Umbelliferone attenuates glycerol-induced myoglobinuric acute kidney injury through peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-γ agonism in rats

Tajpreet Kaur et al.

Summary: The study revealed that umbelliferone can attenuate glycerol-induced kidney injury in rats by regulating biochemical parameters, oxidative stress, and apoptosis. This protective effect may be achieved through PPAR-γ agonism.

The Herbal Compound Thymol Targets Multiple Salmonella Typhimurium Virulence Factors for Lon Protease Degradation

Yong Zhang et al.

Summary: Thymol was found to interfere with bacterial proteins, inducing conformational changes in SipA which makes it susceptible to degradation by the Lon protease, effectively blocking cell invasion by S. Typhimurium. Thymol represents a class of anti-virulence compounds that function by targeting pathogenic factors for degradation.
