Satellite Laser Altimetry Reveals a Net Water Mass Gain in Global Lakes With Spatial Heterogeneity in the Early 21st Century

Shuangxiao Luo et al.

Summary: Lake water storage changes play a crucial role in the climate, hydrological cycle, and environments. Using satellite data from ICESat and ICESat-2, researchers have studied the water level and volume changes in global natural lakes larger than 10 km(2) from 2003 to 2020. They found that, overall, the total water storage in these lakes increased during the studied period. However, large lakes under dry and high water-stress conditions experienced significant water loss. The findings suggest that these drying lakes may continue to shrink in the future due to climate change and increasing water demands.

Seasonal Amplitude of Water Storage Variations of the Yangtze-Huai Plain Lake Group: Implicaion for Floodwater Storage Capacity

Lijuan Song et al.

Summary: Lakes in the Yangtze-Huai River Basin play a significant role in regulating floods and providing water sources. However, the seasonal amplitude of lake water storage variations and their capacity to buffer floodwater in the basin have not been well quantified. This study collects water level data and uses satellite imagery to quantify the water storage dynamics of the plain lake group in the basin. The results indicate substantial seasonal variations in water levels and water storage in Poyang and Dongting Lakes, emphasizing the importance of these lakes in the basin's hydrological system.

Investigating different timescales of terrestrial water storage changes in the northeastern Tibetan Plateau

Pengfei Zhan et al.

Summary: The northeastern Tibetan Plateau has been affected by increasing human activities, which have altered hydrological processes and become key drivers of total terrestrial water storage changes. The study found that while natural lake water storage had a greater long-term influence, man-regulated reservoirs played a significant role in influencing surface water storage changes on interannual and intra-annual timescales. Soil moisture storage increase was also an important factor that cannot be ignored.

Variations in lake water storage over Inner Mongolia during recent three decades based on multi-mission satellites

Yuyue Xu et al.

Summary: Lake shrinkage in Inner Mongolia, a common problem in arid and semi-arid regions, has been analyzed using multi-mission satellite data. The study reveals that human activities, such as coal mining, agricultural irrigation, and grazing, are the main drivers of lake shrinkage, while natural factors have a secondary influence.

Satellite observed recent rising water levels of global lakes and reservoirs

Nan Xu et al.

Summary: This study used ICESat and ICESat-2 altimetry data to investigate global water level changes for 22,008 lakes/reservoirs greater than 1 km2. The results showed that 77.56% of the lakes/reservoirs experienced rising water levels from 2003 to 2021. Globally, 78.84% of lakes exhibited a rising water level, while the proportion for reservoirs was only 56.01%. Large-scale rising water levels were detected in the Tibetan Plateau, the Mississippi River basin, and high-latitude regions of the Northern Hemisphere. The study also found a negative relationship between the percentage of water level rise and population density in global river basins and 11 hotspots. The findings suggest that natural processes contribute to the rising inland water levels, while human activities can balance the rise through reservoir regulation. The study highlights the underestimation of global water level rise by existing datasets and emphasizes the importance of including small lakes/reservoirs in studying global hydrological cycle and water resource management.

Centenary covariations of water salinity and storage of the largest lake of Northwest China reconstructed by machine learning

Xingan Jiang et al.

Summary: This study uses machine learning to reconstruct the centenary variations of water storage and salinity of Bosten Lake in Northwest China. The results show significant changes in the lake's water level and salinity over the past decades. The water level of Bosten Lake experienced a substantial decline in the 1980s and 2010s, but has rapidly recovered in recent years. The study also highlights the close relationship between the lake's salinity and its water level and storage, which are influenced by factors such as vapor pressure, precipitation, and wet day frequency.

Study on spatiotemporal distribution characteristics of flood and drought disaster impacts on agriculture in China

Xinjian Guan et al.

Summary: The research findings suggest that droughts have a significantly higher impact on crops than floods, with overall decreasing trends of their impacts on agriculture from 1978 to 2018. Flood impacts are mainly concentrated in Southwest, Central-south, and East China, while drought impacts are primarily focused in Northeast, Northwest, and North China, with both being serious in Northeast China. The study also shows that the gravity center transfer paths of flood and drought impacts on agriculture are opposite, suggesting a need for specific geographic-based strategies for effective disaster management.
