The Role of Space-Based Observations for Groundwater Resource Monitoring over Africa

Anne Springer et al.

Summary: Africa's vulnerability to climate change impacts, including threats to food security, ecosystem protection, and fresh water resources, highlights the importance of monitoring groundwater storage. This paper reviews satellite remote sensing techniques, particularly GRACE space gravimetry, for addressing groundwater quantity issues in Africa. The study also explores the combination of satellite observations with numerical models and ground observations, as well as quantifying changes in groundwater resources and discussing potential drivers. The literature review includes studies that utilize satellite observations for groundwater research in Africa. Gaps in research and future directions for satellite remote sensing in groundwater monitoring and management in Africa are identified.

Using Satellite-Based Terrestrial Water Storage Data: A Review

Vincent Humphrey et al.

Summary: Land water storage is essential for the Earth's climate, natural ecosystems, and human activities. Since the launch of the first GRACE mission in 2002, satellite observations of changes in terrestrial water storage have provided a global perspective on freshwater resources. However, these datasets have limitations that may not be clear to users unfamiliar with the processing algorithms. This overview aims to provide accessible information on measurement concepts, data products, and recommendations for utilizing the data in interdisciplinary contexts.

Groundwater Volume Loss in Mexico City Constrained by InSAR and GRACE Observations and Mechanical Models

Mohammad Khorrami et al.

Summary: Groundwater withdrawal in Mexico City has led to localized and rapid subsidence, broad elastic uplift, and changes in the gravity field. Analysis of data from GRACE/FO and SAR images reveals a groundwater loss of 0.85-3.87 km(3)/yr in a region surrounding Mexico City and >35 cm/yr subsidence within the city. The application of geological models indicates that groundwater depletion has been accelerating since 2015, exacerbating the socio-economic and health impacts of long-term groundwater overdrafts.

Applications and Challenges of GRACE and GRACE Follow-On Satellite Gravimetry

Jianli Chen et al.

Summary: Time-variable gravity measurements from GRACE and GRACE-FO missions have enabled the study of mass redistribution and transport in the Earth system. These measurements have been widely used to understand mass variations in different components of the Earth system and have improved our understanding of climate system variability. This comprehensive review discusses the major applications of GRACE/GRACE-FO measurements in various fields and the challenges faced in studying mass changes. The extended record of gravity series is expected to lead to a broader range of applications and enhance our understanding of climate change and the Earth system.

Recovering Regional Groundwater Storage Anomalies by Combining GNSS and Surface Mass Load Data: A Case Study in Western Yunnan

Pengfei Xu et al.

Summary: In this study, the CORS network was used to inversely estimate groundwater storage anomalies (GWSA) in western Yunnan. By combining surface mass load data, the accuracy of the inversion results was improved. The results revealed significant seasonal variations in GWSA, and both CORS and GRACE data can monitor GWSA, with CORS providing a more effective spatiotemporal resolution.

Autoregressive Reconstruction of Total Water Storage within GRACE and GRACE Follow-On Gap Period

Artur Lenczuk et al.

Summary: This study proposes a new method that combines a remove-restore technique and autoregressive (AR) prediction to fill the gap between the Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE) missions and reliably predict regional total water storage (TWS) changes. The results show that the method achieves small prediction errors for most areas.

Filling the Data Gaps Within GRACE Missions Using Singular Spectrum Analysis

Shuang Yi et al.

Summary: This study presents a non-parametric, data-adaptive method to fill the missing epochs in the monthly gravity product of satellite missions GRACE and GRACE-FO. Comparison in the spectral domain shows that the method achieves the same signal intensity as GRACE missions for spherical harmonic degrees below 30 and effectively suppresses noise as the degree increases above 30.

Spatio-temporal estimation of monthly groundwater levels from GPS-based land deformation

Muhammad Zeeshan Ali et al.

Summary: This study utilized GPS data to estimate monthly groundwater levels in westcentral Taiwan for 2016-17, showing that time-dependent spatial regression provides more accurate estimation of groundwater level changes. The high correlation between observed and estimated groundwater levels indicates that GPS estimated deformations are a viable alternative for estimating seasonal groundwater changes, especially in areas with limited groundwater monitoring stations.

Glacial change and hydrological implications in the Himalaya and Karakoram

Yong Nie et al.

Summary: Glaciers in the Himalaya-Karakoram mountain ranges provide freshwater and hydropower to millions of people, but they are melting at unsustainably high rates. Recent decades have seen accelerated mass loss in Himalayan glaciers, contrasting with relatively stable Karakoram glaciers. Under various climate change scenarios, glacier meltwater run-off in the two mountain ranges is expected to peak in the next few decades, followed by a decline as the glaciers shrink.
