Condition-based maintenance assessment for a deteriorating system considering stochastic failure dependence

Nan Zhang et al.

Summary: This article discusses the condition-based maintenance optimization of a K-out-of-N deteriorating system considering failure dependence. The degradation of each component is modeled by a pure jump levy process. The model has the flexibility to describe the phenomena of instantaneous failures of multiple components and the accumulative propagation effect. The problem is formulated as a Markov decision process and solved using the value iteration algorithm. The proposed policy is evaluated based on the total expected discounted cost in the long-run horizon. Some structural properties of the optimal maintenance policies are obtained under mild conditions. A numerical example is provided to illustrate the applicability of the proposed model.
