Predicting road blockage due to building damage following earthquakes

Yun-Chi Yu et al.

Summary: Transportation infrastructure plays a crucial role in supporting communities' social and economic activities. This paper proposes a probabilistic model, calibrated using data from the 2010 Haiti Earthquake, to predict road blockage probability. The model considers factors such as building types, damage level, and road characteristics, and can be applied to urban areas without relying on historical earthquake data.

Summary: This paper introduces novel connectivity-based metrics within a Capability Approach framework to quantify well-being and distributive justice in the aftermath of a hazardous event. By linking individual capabilities with the loss or reduction of functionality of transportation infrastructure, the study investigates the impact of both short-term response and long-term recovery on capabilities.

Agent-based model for post-earthquake housing recovery

Rodrigo Costa et al.

Summary: A study using an agent-based model framework investigated housing recovery post-earthquake in Vancouver, identifying the density of old and rented buildings, as well as homeowner income and immigration status as predictors of recovery speed. Simulation results showed that retrofitting vulnerable buildings or increasing workforce can effectively reduce housing recovery times.

Agent-based model on resilience-oriented rapid responses of road networks under seismic hazard

Li Sun et al.

Summary: This paper explores a new approach to minimize functionality losses of Road Networks (RNs) under earthquake hazards by leveraging post-shock rapid responses. An agent-based modelling (ABM) framework is developed for nuanced examination on resilience of earthquake-damaged RNs. Through a case-study in Luchon, France, post-shock rapid responses are shown to be an effective strategy to increase the recovery rate of RNs' functionality in the aftermath of damaging earthquakes.

The effect of resource constraints on housing recovery simulations

Rodrigo Costa et al.

Summary: This paper presents a framework of computer models for simulating the competition for scarce resources during post-earthquake housing recovery, with a case study showcasing the impact on recovery speed and uneven distribution of results. Results demonstrate that accounting for resource scarcity in housing recovery simulations constrains recovery speed, especially negatively affecting tenants and low-income homeowners. Sensitivity analysis of homeowner and contractor firm behaviours highlights their effects on speed and equity in recovery efforts.
