Passive film formation and corrosion resistance of laser-powder bed fusion fabricated NiTi shape memory alloys

Ming Liu et al.

Summary: This study investigates the corrosion behavior of three NiTi shape memory alloys fabricated by laser-powder bed fusion (L-PBF) in a 0.9 wt.% NaCl solution at 37 degrees C. The passive film characteristics and corrosion resistance of L-PBF NiTi vary with their preparation process settings. The presence of defects, such as keyhole pores and cracks, on the L-PBF NiTi surfaces accelerates the passivation reaction process, but results in lower corrosion resistance compared to defect-free surfaces.

Selective inhibition effects on cancer cells and bacteria of Ni-Ti-O nanoporous layers grown on biomedical NiTi alloy by anodization

Yan-Lian Liu et al.

Summary: This study aimed to endow NiTi alloy with anticancer and antibacterial abilities through surface modification. The Ni-Ti-O nanoporous layer demonstrated good performance in inhibiting cancer cell growth and killing bacteria, while showing minimal adverse effects on normal cells, due to the larger amount of Ni ions leached in the acidic microenvironment of cancer cells compared to normal cells. The nanoporous layers show promise as coatings on NiTi stents to prevent re-obstruction after surgery.

The passive properties of TA10 in Coca-Cola containing oral environment

Ming Liu et al.

Summary: The study aimed to analyze the corrosion resistance and composition of the passive film of TA10 alloy in different concentrations of cola, and found that with the increase of cola content, the self-corrosion current density of the alloy increases sharply. The findings have important guiding significance for the safe use of the alloy in complex oral environments.

The effect of Cu-doping on the corrosion behavior of NiTi alloy arch wires under simulated clinical conditions

Jing Wang et al.

Summary: The anti-corrosion behavior of NiTi and CuNiTi arch wires were studied in artificial saliva. CuNiTi arch wire had more defects on the surface yet released less nickel compared to NiTi arch wire. Loading stress increased corrosion in both groups, but doping with Cu element reduced nickel release, possibly lowering the risk of metal allergy.

Predictive analytical modelling and experimental validation of processing maps in additive manufacturing of nitinol alloys

Jia-Ning Zhu et al.

Summary: The study combines analytical models and experimental validation to predict and avoid defects in Nitinol alloys fabricated by L-PBF, resulting in high-quality parts. The process also successfully produces Nitinol samples with a relative density of over 99% by utilizing low linear energy density to prevent crack formation.

Improving exposure of anodically ordered Ni-Ti-O and corrosion resistance and biological properties of NiTi alloys by substrate electropolishing

Yong-Hua Sun et al.

Summary: An electropolishing pretreatment was conducted on NiTi substrates to expose Ni-Ti-O NPs, which effectively removed the top disordered layer to enhance corrosion resistance and biological functions of the NPs. This study suggests that EP is a desirable pretreatment before anodization of NiTi alloys.

Atomic Layer Deposition of aTiO2 Layer on Nitinol and Its Corrosion Resistance in a Simulated Body Fluid

Rebeka Rudolf et al.

Summary: Nitinol is an equiatomic alloy of nickel and titanium with unique properties suitable for biomedical purposes. In this study, Atomic Layer Deposition (ALD) was used to deposit a TiO2 layer on Nitinol to enhance its corrosion resistance. Commercial Nitinol showed improved corrosion resistance compared to in-house continuous vertical cast NiTi rod after TiO2 deposition.
