A study into the long-overlooked carcinogenic radon in bottled water and deep well water in Dhaka, Bangladesh

Jubair Al Mahmud et al.

Summary: The first-ever measurement of radon concentration in commercial bottled water and deep well water samples from Dhaka city was conducted using the RAD7 Radon monitoring system. The results showed that all water samples had radon concentrations within the recommended limits, highlighting the importance of monitoring radon for public health.

Vertical distributions of radionuclides along the tourist-attractive Marayon Tong Hill in the Bandarban district of Bangladesh

M. M. Mahfuz Siraz et al.

Summary: This study is the first of its kind to analyze the vertical distribution of radionuclides in soil samples along different heights of Marayon Tong hill in the Chittagong Hill Tracts, Bandarban using HPGe gamma-ray spectrometry. The average activity concentrations of Th-232, Ra-226, and K-40 were determined, with Th-232 exceeding the world average value. The evaluation of radiation doses and cancer risks suggests the need for monitoring and assessing cumulative radiation doses in the future.

Radon concentration of different brands of bottled natural mineral water commercially sold in Turkey and radiological risk assessment

A. M. A. Seid et al.

Summary: The consumption of bottled natural mineral water has become more popular in Turkey due to the faith about the helpful medicinal and therapeutic impacts of mineral waters including various dissolved minerals. The study measured the activity levels of radon in bottled mineral water samples sold in Turkish markets and assessed the health risk caused by internal exposure to radon. The results showed that the radiation dose from radon in bottled mineral water samples is very low and poses negligible health risks to the public.

Assessment of heavy metal pollution in the agricultural soils, plants, and in the atmospheric particulate matter of a suburban industrial region in Dhaka, Bangladesh

Sadia Alam Shammi et al.

Summary: Unplanned industrialization and improper waste and gas management have led to heavy metal pollution in agricultural lands. Analysis showed moderate contamination in soils with metals, and excess levels of certain heavy metals in plants, indicating a potential transfer from soil to plants. Monitoring and awareness of heavy metal pollution in suburban areas is crucial for decision-makers to protect agricultural lands.

Radionuclides Transfer from Soil to Tea Leaves and Estimation of Committed Effective Dose to the Bangladesh Populace

Nurul Absar et al.

Summary: Using HPGe gamma-ray spectrometry, this study analyzed the concentrations of radionuclides in soil and tea leaves from a large tea plantation in Bangladesh. The transfer factors from soil to tea leaves were found to be relatively low for Ra-226, Th-232, and K-40. The popular tea brands in the market showed similar radionuclide concentrations to the fresh tea leaves, indicating a low radiological risk from tea consumption.

Assessment of natural radioactivity level of soil and water in the region of corlu (Turkey)

Kaan Manisa et al.

Summary: By measuring the activity concentrations of Rn-222 in well waters and natural spring waters in the Corlu region, as well as the activity concentrations of U-238, Th-232, and K-40 in soil samples, it was found that most of the results were within the safe limits recommended by the WHO and UNSCEAR, except for the slightly higher mean specific activity of K-40 radionuclide.
