Dietary Quality and Diet-Related Factors Among Female Adults of Reproductive Age With and Without Disabilities Participating in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys, 2013-2018

Andrea L. Deierlein et al.

Summary: There are differences in diet quality and diet-related factors between female adults with and without disabilities, with disabled women tending to consume unhealthy foods and have lower diet quality. Further investigation into dietary intakes and behaviors, as well as access to and availability of healthy foods, among women with disabilities is necessary.

Socioeconomic Characteristics, Lifestyle Behaviors, and Health Conditions Among Males of Reproductive Age With and Without Disabilities, NHANES 2013-2018

Andrea L. Deierlein et al.

Summary: Health status during the reproductive years affects male fecundity, fertility, and future health. However, there is limited research on preconception health among high-risk populations, especially men with disabilities. This study examined preconception health indicators among males of reproductive age with and without disabilities in the United States. The results showed that suboptimal preconception health indicators were prevalent among all men. Males with disabilities were more likely to have suboptimal preconception health indicators compared to those without disabilities. Strategies to improve sexual health, preconception care, and family planning services are needed for all men, particularly those with disabilities.

Preconception Health and Disability Status Among Women of Reproductive Age Participating in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys, 2013-2018

Andrea L. Deierlein et al.

Summary: The study found that women with disabilities were more likely to have a range of preconception health issues, including depression and diabetes. Disparities in preconception health indicators can be reduced by providing adequate healthcare, changing lifestyle habits, and education and training for healthcare practitioners.

Exploration of diet, physical activity, health knowledge and the cardiometabolic profile of young adults with intellectual disability

C. C. Zwack et al.

Summary: The study shows that young adults with ID are at increased risk of obesity, engage in less physical activity than their peers, and have unhealthier diets. Knowledge about nutrition and physical activity seem to be important predictors of cardiometabolic risk in this population.

Summary: The study found generally good consistency between HEI-2015 scores based on observed intake and reported intake, with larger differences observed in a small group setting. Lower HEI-2015 scores were derived from observed intake among individuals with lower education levels and BMI >= 30.
