The connection between heart rate variability (HRV), neurological health, and cognition: A literature review

Xianghong Arakaki et al.

Summary: The heart and brain have bidirectional influences on each other, including autonomic regulation and hemodynamic connections. Heart rate variability (HRV) measures beat-to-beat interval variation. New findings about disorganized sinus rhythm (quantified as heart rate fragmentation, HRF) suggest potential overestimation of autonomic activities in HRV changes, especially during aging or cardiovascular events. HRV, regulated via the central autonomic network (CAN), acts as a proxy of autonomic activity and is associated with executive functions, decision-making, and emotional regulation in our health and wellbeing. Abnormal changes of HRV, such as decreased vagal functioning, are observed in various neurological conditions including mild cognitive impairments, dementia, mild traumatic brain injury, migraine, COVID-19, stroke, epilepsy, and psychological conditions (anxiety, stress, and schizophrenia). Efforts are needed to improve the dynamic and intriguing heart-brain interactions.

Exercising the Sleepy-ing Brain: Exercise, Sleep, and Sleep Loss on Memory

Marc Roig et al.

Summary: This article examines the novel hypothesis that physical exercise and sleep have synergistic effects on memory. The study found that exercise can trigger mechanisms that can create an optimal brain state during sleep to facilitate memory processing. Additionally, the article discusses the possibility that exercise could counteract the deleterious effects of sleep deprivation on memory by protecting neuroplasticity.

Cardiac autonomic disturbance following sprint-interval exercise in untrained young males: Does exercise volume matter?

Yingfeng Ye et al.

Summary: This study examined the influence of the volume of sprint-interval exercise (SIE) on post-exercise heart rate variability (HRV) recovery. The results showed that SIE significantly affected HRV, but it gradually recovered during the recovery period. The volume of SIE did not significantly affect the rate of HRV recovery. Additionally, resting for approximately 10 hours appeared to be appropriate for cardiovascular system recovery.

Ambulatory heart rate variability in overweight and obese men after high-intensity interval exercise versus moderate-intensity continuous exercise

Andre Rodrigues Lourenco Dias et al.

Summary: This study compared the 24-hour ambulatory heart rate variability in young overweight and obese men following high-intensity interval exercise (HIIE) and moderate-intensity continuous exercise (MICE), finding no significant differences between the two. However, HIIE was shown to increase cardiac autonomic modulation during the sleep period as a protector of the cardiovascular system, despite its small effect.

RMSSD Is More Sensitive to Artifacts Than Frequency-Domain Parameters: Implication in Athletes? Monitoring

Nicolas Bourdillon et al.

Summary: The purpose of this study was to assess the effects of artifacts on heart rate variability (HRV) parameters. The results showed that a single artifact had a larger impact on the root mean square of the successive differences (RMSSD) and standard deviation of the normal to normal inter beat intervals (SDNN), while the impact on the low-frequency (LF) and high-frequency (HF) bands was smaller. Therefore, it is recommended to use both time-domain and frequency-domain parameters to minimize the possibility of misinterpretation in the diagnosis of health status or fatigue in athletes.

Links between the brain and body during sleep: implications for memory processing

Lauren N. Whitehurst et al.

Summary: Sleep is closely related to memory processes. It has long been believed that the transformation of experiences into long-term memories is linked to sleep-related central nervous system function, but there is increasing evidence that the autonomic nervous system can also impact memory processing during sleep. This paper reviews human research on the role of autonomic activity and sleep in memory formation and considers the importance of the link between autonomic activity and polysomnographic markers of sleep in understanding cognitive aging in humans.

Understanding the roles of central and autonomic activity during sleep in the improvement of working memory and episodic memory

Pin-Chun Chen et al.

Summary: Significant progress has been made in understanding the sleep mechanisms that support cognition, with most research focusing on the electrophysiological events of the central nervous system. However, recent studies have highlighted the importance of the autonomic nervous system during sleep in contributing to cognition. This article examines the independent and interactive roles of the central and autonomic activities during sleep and wakefulness in cognitive processing, specifically in working memory and hippocampal-dependent episodic memory. The Slow Oscillation Switch Model proposes separate and competing mechanisms supporting these two memory domains. Further research is needed to understand how the brain and body interact during sleep to support various cognitive functions.

Effects of Different Training Interventions on Heart Rate Variability and Cardiovascular Health and Risk Factors in Young and Middle-Aged Adults: A Systematic Review

Bernhard Graessler et al.

Summary: This systematic review examined the effects of different physical training modalities on resting HRV, cardiovascular health, and risk factors in young and middle-aged, healthy adults. The results showed improvements in linear and non-linear HRV parameters and cardiovascular health and risk factors for all types of interventions. The study also identified methodological and reporting deficits in the quality assessment of eligible studies.
