Valence precedes value in neural encoding of prediction error

Harry Stewardson et al.

Summary: Event-related potentials reflect neural encoding of prediction errors in reinforcement learning tasks. Multiple different encodings of prediction errors have been observed in the interval of 240-340 ms, including a value signal carrying signed quantitative prediction error and a valence signal merely carrying sign. Discrimination between these encoders is made possible by comparing tasks with different possible outcomes. This study presents a meta-analysis of reinforcement learning experiments, suggesting that valence encoding precedes value encoding.

Valence-dependent Neural Correlates of Augmented Feedback Processing in Extensive Motor Sequence Learning - Part I: Practice-related Changes of Feedback Processing

Linda Margraf et al.

Summary: This study examines the changes in neural feedback processing during the practice of a motor task. Negative feedback elicits more negative responses in the feedback-related negativity, while late fronto-central positivity is associated with complex feedback. Positive feedback activates the P300 more strongly, indicating its significance in updating internal models. After practice, an increase in the P300 amplitude suggests an improved ability to update internal representations based on feedback information.

Relevance of Predictive and Postdictive Error Information in the Course of Motor Learning

Lisa K. Maurer et al.

Summary: The human brain has the ability to predict the sensory consequences of physical movements through a forward model that generates predictions based on sensory and efferent information. This experiment studied the neural processes of error-related negativity (ERN) during the learning process and found that as task performance improved, the amplitude of ERN increased while the feedback-related negativity (FRN) attenuated. This suggests that in the early stages of learning, the motor control system relies more on external feedback, and as task performance improves, the forward model generates more accurate predictions, which contributes to error processing. The data also indicates a complementary relationship between ERN and FRN in motor learning.

Valence-dependent neural correlates of augmented feedback processing in extensive motor sequence learning-Part II: Predictive value of event-related potentials for behavioral adaptation and learning

Linda Margraf et al.

Summary: This study examines the relationship between neural feedback processing and behavioral adaptations, as well as its impact on long-term learning and motor automatization. The results show that different types of feedback (positive and negative) have different predictive effects on behavioral adaptations, and early practice phase and goal-directed behavioral adaptations have an impact on neural feedback processing.

Acting in Temporal Contexts: On the Behavioral and Neurophysiological Consequences of Feedback Delays

Britta M. Hinneberg et al.

Summary: This article investigates the impact of reward feedback on reinforcement learning in decision-making tasks. The study finds that the performance and learning impairments due to feedback delay vary depending on the type of task, with implicit processing tasks being more affected. However, the feedback-related negativity, an event related potential in the electroencephalogram, is similarly affected by feedback delay regardless of task type. The article suggests a common explanatory approach for both behavioral and electrophysiological findings, envisioning implicit and explicit processing as opposite ends on a continuum determined by feedback delay.

Disentangling performance-monitoring signals encoded in feedback-related EEG dynamics

Franziska Kirsch et al.

Summary: The study investigates the independent contributions of valence, surprise, and reward prediction errors (RPE) on the feedback-related neuronal signal, specifically the FRN and P3 components. With a large sample size of 992 healthy individuals, the results show that valence and surprise modulate the FRN, whereas both global and local surprise influence the P3. The behavioral adaptations after feedback and FRN have small associations. These findings support the theory of the FRN as a representation of a signed RPE and indicate that the P3 is involved in evaluating prediction errors in decision-making and learning tasks.

Summary: Human learning may depend on the evaluation of the outcomes of our actions aligning with expectations, with EEG being used to study the neural signatures of feedback processing. While there is vast literature on the neural correlates of feedback processing, there are still methodological discrepancies and differences in results across studies.
