Transforming experiences: Neurobiology of memory updating/editing

Daniel Osorio-Gomez et al.

Summary: Long-term memory is achieved through consolidation and can be updated by new information or prediction errors. This review discusses the neurobiological systems involved in memory updating, including recognition memory and emotional memories. It also examines the potential clinical implications of memory updating in drug addiction, phobias, and post-traumatic stress disorder.

Consequences of Hyperphosphorylated Tau in the Locus Coeruleus on Behavior and Cognition in a Rat Model of Alzheimer's Disease

Michael A. Kelberman et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of hyperphosphorylated tau on AD-related neuropathology and behavior using TgF344-AD rats and WT rats as well as relevant viral models. The results showed that the effects of hyperphosphorylated tau on AD-like neuropathology and behavioral symptoms were subtle.

A novel preclinical model of environment-like combined benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylenes (BTEX) exposure: Behavioral and neurochemical findings

Cameron J. Davidson et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of combined environmental exposure to BTEX (Benzene, Toluene, Ethylbenzene, and Xylene) on behavior and neurochemistry in mice. The results showed that exposure to environmentally representative concentrations of BTEX can lead to subtle effects on locomotor activity.

Sex differences in noradrenergic modulation of attention and impulsivity in rats

Xiaolin Mei et al.

Summary: Our study found that male and female rats showed equal learning speed and no significant baseline differences in performance. Atomoxetine reduced premature responses in both sexes, with a greater reduction in males. However, atomoxetine had less beneficial effects on impulsive control in females and even impaired attentional performance in female rats. The alpha 1 receptors were found to be mainly responsible for sex differences in attention under noradrenaline modulation. The results highlight the need for sex-specific treatments in addressing attention and impulsivity.

Norepinephrine as a spatial memory reset signal

Stephanie L. Grella et al.

Summary: Experimental studies suggest that norepinephrine may play a role in memory updating in the hippocampus by recruiting new neurons to alter previously established ensembles. However, its effects can be beneficial or detrimental depending on the situation.

Effects of fentanyl on acute locomotor activity, behavioral sensitization, and contextual reward in female and male rats

Andrew D. Gaulden et al.

Summary: Female rats showed elevated locomotor activity in response to acute fentanyl and behavioral sensitization to repeated administration, while male rats exhibited a stronger conditioned place preference effect. Secondary investigation suggested that non-estrus phases in females may predict fentanyl preference.

The role of medial prefrontal cortex projections to locus ceruleus in mediating the sex differences in behavior in mice with inflammatory pain

Andrea Cardenas et al.

Summary: Our study revealed that injection of CFA induced inflammatory pain leading to decreased thermal thresholds in both male and female mice. However, only male mice showed anxiety-like behavior and cognitive deficits, while females were unaffected. Additionally, our findings suggest that dysregulation of the top-down control of locus ceruleus's activity by the medial prefrontal cortex may contribute to sex differences in cognitive effects associated with inflammatory pain.

Locus Coeruleus Norepinephrine in Learned Behavior: Anatomical Modularity and Spatiotemporal Integration in Targets

Vincent Breton-Provencher et al.

Summary: The locus coeruleus (LC) is a primary source of norepinephrine (NE) in the brain, controlling arousal and various behavioral functions. Despite limited understanding of the role of LC-NE in behavior and the circuits controlling LC activity, new evidence suggests that the modular organization of the LC could enable task-specific modulation of different brain regions.
