Activation of Substituted Metallocene Catalysts Using Methylaluminoxane

Scott Collins et al.

Summary: ESI-MS analysis revealed that activation of BuCp2ZrCl2 and EBIZrCl2 using MAO leads to the formation of dinuclear complexes in the former case, accompanied by catalyst deactivation, while no such behavior was observed in the latter case. Leaching experiments showed the presence of both active BuCp2ZrMe2AlMe2 and deactivated [(BuCp2Zr)(2)(mu-CH2)mu-Cl]MAO complexes. DFT calculations suggested that the observed long-wavelength absorption in experimental spectra of activated BuCp2ZrCl2 complexes may be attributed to the presence of the detected dinuclear cations.

Cocatalyst effects in a-diimine nickel catalyzed ethylene polymerization

Menghe Xu et al.

Summary: Two alpha-diimine nickel dimethyl complexes with different steric hindrance effects were synthesized and characterized. Organoboron cocatalysts B(C6F5)3 or [Ph3C][B(C6F5)4] can activate these complexes for ethylene polymerization without the need for any organoaluminium cocatalysts or scavengers. B1 exhibits higher catalytic activity than B2, resulting in polyethylenes with slightly lower molecular weight, higher branching densities, and lower melting temperatures. The resulting polyolefins also display good tensile and elastic properties. DFT calculations suggest that the counter anion derived from B1 contributes to increased stability and activity.
