Effect of tea tree oil addition on the microstructure, structure and selected properties of chitosan-based coatings electrophoretically deposited on zirconium alloy substrates

Mikolaj Mielczarek et al.

Summary: In this study, Tea Tree Oil (TTO)/chitosan coatings with different TTO concentrations were deposited on Zr-2.5Nb alloy substrates using electrophoretic deposition (EPD). The properties of the coatings and the EPD kinetics were analyzed, as well as the influence of TTO on the chitosan solutions. The coatings showed excellent adhesion to rough substrates and exhibited a hydrophobic character. The addition of TTO resulted in the formation of new hydrogen bonds between chitosan and TTO components.

Electrophoretic deposition of collagen/chitosan films with copper-doped phosphate glasses for orthopaedic implants

Imran Deen et al.

Summary: Coatings with bioactive and biodegradable properties were fabricated using electrophoretic deposition with composite collagen, chitosan, and copper-doped phosphate glass. Variations in the coating composition were achieved by altering the concentrations of collagen and chitosan in the solutions, as well as by depositing phosphate glass with different levels of copper dopant. The ability to deposit these polymer-phosphate glass coatings offers potential for tailored orthopaedic implants with enhanced bioactivity and reduced risk of rejection.

Emerging concepts in bone repair and the premise of soft materials

Iman Roohani et al.

Summary: Human bones have a natural ability to regenerate, but for severe bone diseases or large defects, bone grafts or substitutes are needed. Tissue-engineered materials have limited regenerative capacity compared to native bone grafts, which is due to a lack of understanding of key events during bone healing and the inability to recreate the structure and composition of the target tissue. New strategies and advanced biomaterials have emerged to overcome this limitation.
