A switchable zwitterionic ester and capsaicin copolymer for multifunctional marine antibiofouling coating

Hao Zhang et al.

Summary: In this study, a multifunctional marine antibiofouling coating was developed by covalently grafting switchable zwitterionic ester and capsaicin copolymers onto the polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) network. The coating demonstrated the ability to both kill bacteria and repel marine organisms, leading to significantly reduced protein, bacterial, diatom, and pseudo barnacle adhesion. Marine field tests confirmed the excellent antibiofouling ability of the coating.

One-step zwitterionization and quaternization of thick PDMAEMA layer grafted through subsurface-initiated ATRP for robust antibiofouling and antibacterial coating on PDMS

Xin Yu et al.

Summary: In this study, a thick PDMAEMA layer was successfully grafted on PDMS via subsurface-initiated atom transfer radical polymerization (SSI-ATRP), where the self-migration of DMAEMA monomers into PDMS subsurface was shown to be crucial. The thick microscale graft layer exhibited superior performance compared to nanoscale graft layers obtained by conventional methods, and simultaneous zwitterionization and quaternization of the PDMAEMA layer was achieved through a simple one-step process. The results indicated that a high zwitterionization degree and low quaternization degree on the PDMAEMA layer had a well-balanced effect on fouling repellence and bactericidal activity.

Distinctive roles of graphene oxide, ZnO quantum dots, and their nanohybrids in anti-corrosion and anti-fouling performance of waterborne epoxy coatings

Ziyang Zhou et al.

Summary: In this research, amino-silane functionalized ZnO quantum dots (F-ZnO QDs), graphene oxide (F-GO), and their nanohybrids (F-GO@ZnO QDs) were used as effective nanofillers to improve the anti-corrosion and antifouling properties of waterborne epoxy coatings. The synthesized nanomaterials were characterized before and after silane functionalization. The nanocomposite waterborne epoxy coatings loaded with different nanofillers were prepared and their effects on surface roughness, water contact angle, adhesion strength, fracture surface, and corrosion resistance were considered. The results showed that the F-GO@ZnO QDs provided the highest barrier and corrosion resistance on the steel substrates, and the nanocomposite coatings exhibited higher water contact angle and adhesion strength. The antibacterial and antifouling properties of the coatings were also confirmed. The multifunctional performance of the epoxy/F-GO@ZnO QDs was attributed to the synergy effect between the GO, ZnO QDs, and amino-silane, highlighting the importance of nanohybrids in combining the advantages of different nanomaterials in one coating system.
