Biogeochemical Dynamics in Adjacent Mesoscale Eddies of Opposite Polarity

Benedetto Barone et al.

Summary: This study examined the biogeochemical impacts of cyclones and anticyclones in the North Pacific Subtropical Gyre. It found that cyclones led to increased nutrient fluxes due to diapycnal mixing, resulting in changes in plankton community and oxygen and nutrient concentrations. However, the stoichiometry of oxygen and inorganic nutrients did not match predictions, suggesting additional biological processes at play. The study highlights the importance of mesoscale biogeochemical perturbations in oligotrophic ecosystems.

Vertical Structure in Phytoplankton Growth and Productivity Inferred From Biogeochemical-Argo Floats and the Carbon-Based Productivity Model

Lionel A. Arteaga et al.

Summary: This study combines data from biogeochemical Argo floats with a carbon-based productivity model to compute vertically resolved estimates of marine net primary production (NPP). In the Southern Ocean, the depth-reconstructing implementation of the model overestimates phytoplankton division rates and Chl:C below the mixed layer, but improves by accounting for deep iron limitation.

META3.1exp: a new global mesoscale eddy trajectory atlas derived from altimetry

Cori Pegliasco et al.

Summary: This paper presents the new global Mesoscale Eddy Trajectory Atlases (META3.1exp DT all-satellites, Pegliasco et al., 2021a; and META3.1exp DT two-satellites, Pegliasco et al., 2021b), which provide improved eddy identification and trajectory data. The products include supplementary eddy information, such as eddy shapes and speed profiles, and use a new detection algorithm based on the absolute dynamic topography (ADT) field. Comparison with the previous META2.0 product shows differences in eddy distributions and physical characteristics. The additional information provided by META3.1exp allows for more accurate collocation of mesoscale structures with data from other sources, making it recommended for multidisciplinary applications.

Eddy-Induced Near-Surface Chlorophyll Anomalies in the Subtropical Gyres: Biomass or Physiology?

Qingyou He et al.

Summary: Recent satellite observations show higher near-surface phytoplankton chlorophyll concentration in anticyclonic eddies (AEs) than in cyclonic eddies (CEs) in the subtropical gyres, contrary to prevailing features in midlatitude oceans. This finding suggests that the difference in chlorophyll levels is mainly due to physiological adjustments rather than changes in phytoplankton biomass, prompting a reassessment of the effects of eddies on oceanic productivity and carbon cycling in subtropical gyres.

Deep Chlorophyll Maxima in the Global Ocean: Occurrences, Drivers and Characteristics

M. Cornec et al.

Summary: Stratified oceanic systems have Deep Chlorophyll a Maximum (DCM) which can be either Deep Biomass Maximum (DBM) or Deep photoAcclimation Maximum (DAM). A global study using a dataset from over 500 Biogeochemical-Argo floats revealed that the seasonal dynamics of DCMs vary by region and are primarily influenced by light attenuation.

Impact of Mesoscale Eddies on Deep Chlorophyll Maxima

Marin Cornec et al.

Summary: Research shows that cyclonic eddies can increase the occurrence of Deep Chlorophyll Maxima (DCM) with high phytoplankton biomass, while anticyclonic eddies mainly affect DCM through photoacclimation without significant biomass accumulation. These findings suggest different impacts of the two types of eddies on the role of DCMs in global primary production.

Impact of mesoscale eddies on the source funnel of sediment trap measurements in the South China Sea

Wentao Ma et al.

Summary: The study revealed the significant role of eddies in the lateral transport of sinking particles, especially for particles with low sinking velocities; the source of particles depends on both sinking velocity and seasonal background currents; the eddy currents control the movement of particles within the eddy, with slow-sinking particles potentially transported from the edge to the center of the eddy.
