Study of the surface roughness of a remanufactured bimetallic AISI 1045 and 316L SS part obtained by hybrid manufacturing (DED/HSM)

German Alberto Barragan de los Rios et al.

Summary: Directed energy deposition (DED) is an additive manufacturing process that can be used for remanufacturing and repairing metal parts. It allows the combination of materials with different properties and surface functionalization. However, post-processing steps are required to improve the surface and dimensional quality. This research combines DED with high-speed machining (HSM) in a hybrid manufacturing (HM) process to improve surface finishing and dimensional accuracy. The results show that the parameters and strategy employed by DED-LB and HSM can produce material with no significant defects and improve corrosion resistance and wear resistance.

Influence of porosity on mechanical and corrosion properties of SLM 316L stainless steel

Dengcui Yang et al.

Summary: In this study, 316L stainless steel was fabricated by selective laser melting with different process parameters. The microstructure, porosity characteristic, and mechanical and corrosion properties were investigated. The results showed that different solidified melt pool morphologies can be formed by changing the combination of laser power and scanning speed. The development of porosities depends on the melt pool. Strength does not significantly change with the decrease in porosity level and pores size, but it significantly influences ductility. Pores have higher sensitivity to pitting behavior and samples with higher porosity level are more prone to pitting and breaking down.
