Effect of heat treatments on microstructure, mechanical and electrical properties of Cu-Cr-Zr alloy manufactured by laser powder bed fusion

Jiqiang Zhou et al.

Summary: Copper-Chromium-Zirconium alloys are favored in electronic materials due to their excellent electrical conductivity and mechanical strength. However, additive manufacturing of Cu-Cr-Zr alloy parts remains challenging. This study used laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) to process Cu-Cr-Zr alloy and determined optimal processing parameters by monitoring sample density. Direct aging treatment from 400°C to 620°C improved strength and electrical conductivity. Tensile strength initially increased and then decreased with aging temperature, while electrical conductivity gradually increased. Aging at 475°C for 2 hours resulted in a tensile strength of 519.3 MPa, 15.5% elongation, and 78.7% IACS electrical conductivity. Theoretical calculations indicated that precipitates of Cr-enriched phases were the main factors behind increased strength and electrical conductivity.

Summary: The roles of Hf element in the Cu-Cr-Zr-Hf alloys were investigated, and it was found that the addition of 0.2 wt% Hf can activate multiple slip activities, influencing the mechanical properties, deformation mode and orientation evolution. The addition of Hf promotes dislocation generation, enhances work hardening rate and inhibits strain localization at grain boundaries. The interaction between dislocations on different slip systems restricts lattice rotation and improves grain stability.

Microstructure and properties of Cu-Cr-Zr (Mg) alloys subjected to cryorolling and aging treatment

Longjian Li et al.

Summary: The Cu-1Cr-0.2Zr (wt%) alloys with trace Mg (0.05 wt%) were prepared using a two-step cryorolling and aging (CRA) process. The effects of the CRA process and Mg element on microstructural evolution, mechanical properties, and electrical conductivity were investigated. The two-step CRA process resulted in the formation of high-density deformation twins and dislocations, while the addition of Mg element decreased the widths of deformation bands and twins. The fine precipitates and depletion of Cr and Zr elements contributed to the enhanced performance of Cu-Cr-Zr-Mg alloys, achieving high tensile strength and electrical conductivity simultaneously.

Precipitates in the alloys with Co showed improved volume fraction and size compared to Cu-Ni-Si alloy, with precipitation strengthening identified as the key reinforcement mechanism.

Effects of microelements on the microstructure evolution and properties of ultrahigh strength Cu-Ti alloys

Lan Huang et al.

Summary: High ductility Cu-Ti alloys were fabricated and investigated systematically in this work, with strength and plasticity being improved by adding high Ti and Cr content. The crystal relationship between different phases was studied, and precipitation strengthening was identified as the primary strengthening mechanism. The CuTiCrMg alloy and CuTiCrMg-Fe alloy exhibited different mechanical properties after aging, with the former showing higher hardness and yield strength while the latter had higher elongation.

Microstructure evolution and properties of a Cu-Cr-Zr alloy with high strength and high conductivity

Jiazhi Li et al.

Summary: The study investigated the effects of multistage rolling and aging on a Cu-Cr-Zr-Ni-Si-Ti alloy, and found that the optimal comprehensive performance can be achieved through three-stage rolling and aging. The microstructure and various strengthening mechanisms play key roles in improving the mechanical and electrical properties of the alloy.

Zr-containing precipitate evolution and its effect on the mechanical properties of Cu-Cr-Zr alloys

Yibo Du et al.

Summary: The Zr-containing precipitates in the Cu alloy first form coherent Zr-rich atomic clusters on the {111} crystal plane of copper during aging, which then transform into Cu5Zr phase as aging time increases. The contribution of Zr-rich atomic clusters and Cu5Zr precipitates to the yield strength of the alloy is calculated by coherency strengthening and Orowan strengthening, respectively. The total yield strength is very close to the experimentally measured strength.

Effect of vanadium on the microstructure and kinetics of discontinuous precipitation in Cu-3.2Ti-0.2Fe alloy

Weijiang Liu et al.

Summary: The study showed that increasing V content in Cu-3.2Ti-0.2Fe-xV alloys led to a higher volume fraction of Laves_C14, which effectively refined grain size during casting and inhibited grain growth during solution treatment. The activation energies of the alloys varied with V content, while discontinuous precipitation was influenced by grain boundary diffusion.
