Sooting tendency of isopropanol-butanol-ethanol (IBE)/diesel surrogate blends in laminar diffusion flames

Abhee Singh et al.

Summary: Recent advancements in metabolic engineering have shown that isopropanol-butanol-ethanol (IBE) can be produced cost-effectively from switchgrass biomass. This makes IBE a promising fuel for the future, allowing for a transition to renewable biofuels in the transportation sector. Experimental measurements and numerical modeling studies were conducted to examine the sooting tendency of IBE when blended with a diesel surrogate. The results showed that increasing the IBE content led to a decrease in soot formation and suggested potential mechanisms for reducing soot through the perturbation of reaction intermediates and the augmentation of oxidation reactions.

Collective influence and optimization of 1-hexanol, fuel injection timing, and EGR to control toxic emissions from a light-duty agricultural diesel engine fueled with diesel/waste cooking oil methyl ester blends

Melvin Victor De Poures et al.

Summary: This study aimed to optimize the performance of a direct injection diesel engine by utilizing a ternary blend of diesel, biodiesel, and 1-hexanol. The fuel injection timing and exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) were optimized using response surface methodology (RSM). The HX20 blend (diesel 50 v/v% + biodiesel 30 v/v% + 1-hexanol 20 v/v%) injected at lesser fuel injection timing and EGR rate showed the best emission and performance characteristics.

Comparison of direct and port injection of methanol in a RCCI engine using diesel and biodiesel as high reactivity fuels

Sehmus Altun et al.

Summary: This study compares methanol dual-direct injection (DI2 mode) with port injection of methanol (RCCI mode) when using biodiesel and diesel fuel as High Reactivity Fuels (HRFs). DI2 shows reductions in unburned HC and CO emissions compared to RCCI mode, and slightly higher NOx emissions. In RCCI mode, NOx emissions are significantly reduced, while CO and unburned HC emissions are higher. The study also investigates the effects of premixed ratio (Rp) on combustion performance and ignition delay, finding that DI2 can control inefficient combustion during RCCI operation fueled by diesel fuel and biodiesel.

Diesel blends with high concentrations of biodiesel and n-butanol: Effects on regulated pollutants and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons

Nadir Yilmaz et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effects of diesel, waste oil biodiesel, and n-butanol blends on engine function and emissions, finding that appropriate blend ratios can reduce NOx and PAH emissions but increase unburned hydrocarbons and CO emissions. Fuel properties not only affect PAH formation, but also influence the generation of other emissions.

Effects of different injection timing on the performance, combustion and emission characteristics of diesel/ethanol/n-butanol blended diesel engine based on multi-objective optimization theory

Jiangtao Li et al.

Summary: In this study, a three-dimensional model of an engine cylinder was developed using the commercial simulation software AVL-Fire. The effects of different diesel/ethanol/n-butanol blend percentages and injection timings on the combustion and emission characteristics of a diesel engine were investigated. The results showed that suitable injection timing and increased ethanol and n-butanol percentages improved the combustion efficiency and fuel economy, while reducing emissions.

Experimental and modeling study of the autoignition for diesel and n-alcohol blends from ethanol to n-pentanol in shock tube and rapid compression machine

Sixu Wang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the ignition delay times (IDTs) of n-alcohol/diesel blends and their influencing factors through experiments and simulations. It was found that the IDTs of blends were affected by the chain length of the n-alcohol at different temperatures, and the simulation results showed relatively good agreement with high-temperature ignition data but significantly overestimated the reactivity of blends at low-to-intermediate temperatures.

Effects of injection timing and EGR on combustion and emissions characteristics of the diesel engine fuelled with acetone-butanol-ethanol/diesel blend fuels

Xiongbo Duan et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of different ABE ratios and injection timings on the combustion and emissions behaviors of diesel engines fueled with ABE/diesel blended fuel. The results showed that the combustion process of diesel engines fueled with ABE/diesel fuel was strongly affected by injection timing and EGR.
