Membrane contactor onsite piloting for nutrient recovery from mesophilic digester reject water: The effect of process conditions and pre-treatment options

Raed A. Al-Juboori et al.

Summary: Nutrient recovery is an important aspect of the circular economy, and this study focuses on the outcomes of a field testing pilot-scale membrane contactor system for nitrogen and phosphorous recovery. The results show that the system has a high tolerance for solids and the ammonia transfer rate improves with higher feed flow. Decreasing the retention time and adjusting the feed pH can also enhance the ammonia mass transfer rate. Strong acids such as HNO3 and H2SO4 have a higher ammonia recovery rate than H3PO4. Pre-treating the feedwater with starch or poly-aluminum chloride/polymer can achieve similar ammonia accumulation rates. The produced sludge and ammonium salts have potential agricultural applications.
