External heating-induced thermal runaway and gas venting characteristics of polymer lithium-ion cells with LiNixCoyMnzO2 cathode

Zhi Wang et al.

Summary: Thermal runaway is a critical issue in the storage and application of lithium-ion cells. Through thermal runaway experiments and hazard analysis, it was found that cells with SOC between 50-100% exhibit strong gas venting under external heating, accompanied by higher surface temperature, temperature rate, voltage dropping, and mass loss. The gas centerline temperature distribution follows a piecewise exponential expression. The venting rate and internal pressure increase monotonously with increasing SOC.

Effect of low temperature on thermal runaway and fire behaviors of 18650 lithium-ion battery: A comprehensive experimental study

Depeng Kong et al.

Summary: A series of experiments were conducted to investigate the effect of operating temperature on the thermal runaway and combustion behavior of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). The results showed that the onset temperature of thermal runaway decreased significantly with decreasing operating temperature. Low-temperature cycling led to earlier safety valve cracking and thermal runaway. This study provides detailed insights into the characteristics and mechanisms of thermal runaway behavior changes in LIBs at low temperatures, which can guide process safety assurance and fire protection design for battery applications in low-temperature environments.

Study on the combustion behaviors and thermal stability of aging lithium-ion batteries with different states of charge at low pressure

Nannan Zhu et al.

Summary: Currently, there are various applications for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) in high-temperature environments, but the fire and explosion risks of LIBs pose a serious threat to transportation, industry applications, and the environment. This study investigates the characteristics of thermal runaway (TR) for commercial LIBs with different states of charge (SOCs) by considering the influence of ambient pressure. The results show that aging LIBs do not exhibit significant spark ejection, and the maximum flame temperature and average mass loss rate of LIBs are correlated with SOC. Additionally, a modified energy balance equation is established to quantify the relationship between cell surface temperature and SOC under different environmental conditions.

Fire risk assessment in lithium-ion battery warehouse based on the Bayesian network

Jun Xie et al.

Summary: Because of the instability and susceptibility to thermal runaway of lithium-ion batteries, their storage has always been at high risk of fire. This study proposed a comprehensive framework using Bayesian networks and expert evaluation to assess the fire risk in lithium-ion battery warehouses. The results showed that the framework was a reliable method for fire risk assessment in these warehouses.

Effect of initial turbulence on explosion behavior of stoichiometric methane-ethylene-air mixtures in confined space

Kai Wang et al.

Summary: The turbulent explosion process of stoichiometric CH4/C2H4/air mixtures was experimentally studied, and the effects of turbulence intensity and fuel composition on explosion characteristics were analyzed. The results showed that both turbulence intensity and ethylene content can promote the occurrence of explosion and increase the severity of the explosion.

Dongxu Ouyang et al.

Summary: A series of experiments were conducted to investigate the impact of safety vents on the thermal runaway behaviors of lithium-ion batteries. The results showed that safety vents could delay the occurrence of thermal runaway, but the effect varied with the state of charge and cathode chemistry.
