Sulphated glucuronomannan tetramer and hexamer from Sargassum thunbergii exhibit anti-human cytomegalovirus activity by blocking viral entry

Sanying Wang et al.

Summary: The research demonstrated that the degree of sulphation and polymerization is crucial for anti-HCMV activity, with higher sulphated glucuronomannan tetramer and hexamer showing satisfactory results. Furthermore, sulphated glucuronomannan oligosaccharides can exert their anti-HCMV activity mainly in the early stage of infection through the negative charge of the sulphate groups and interaction with host cells.

Sulfated glucuronomannan hexasaccharide G6S1 enhanced lipolysis and lipophagy via PPARα pathway

Min Cai et al.

Summary: The highly sulfated glucuronomannan hexamer G6S1 was found to enhance lipophagy in hepatocytes, reducing the number and size of lipid droplets. It increased the expression of lipolysis-related proteins and promoted lipid turnover by enhancing PPAR alpha expression. These effects were inhibited by autophagy inhibitor 3-MA and PPAR alpha inhibitor MK-886, suggesting that G6S1 promotes lipophagy through PPAR alpha activation.

Fucoidan reduces lipid accumulation by promoting foam cell autophagy via TFEB

Jiarui Zhao et al.

Summary: Fucoidan reduces lipid accumulation in foam cells by enhancing autophagy through the upregulation of transcription factor EB (TFEB), which could be a valuable treatment for atherosclerosis given the role of foam cells in the disease.

Ferroptosis: mechanisms and links with diseases

Hong-fa Yan et al.

Summary: Ferroptosis is a form of cell death that is iron-dependent and involves accumulation of lethal lipid species from lipid peroxidation. This review discusses the regulatory mechanisms of ferroptosis and its connections with iron, lipid, and cysteine metabolism pathways. Additionally, it explores the role of ferroptosis in diseases such as cancer, ischemia/reperfusion, Alzheimer's disease, and Parkinson's disease, and evaluates the potential therapeutic applications of ferroptosis inhibitors in clinical settings.
