Taxonomic Revision of the Genus Miltotranes Zimmerman, 1994 (Coleoptera: Curculionidae: Molytinae), the Bowenia-Pollinating Cycad Weevils in Australia, with Description of a New Species and Implications for the Systematics of Bowenia

Yun Hsiao et al.

Summary: This study provides a taxonomic revision of Miltotranes weevils and identifies two previously described species and a newly recognized species. The study also reveals the affinity of Miltotranes weevils to Tranes, which are pollinators of other cycads. The findings suggest a secondary host switch in the Tranes group and highlight the importance of studying plant-associated insects for the taxonomy of their host plants.

The Cycas genome and the early evolution of seed plants

Yang Liu et al.

Summary: Cycads, as one of the oldest lineages of seed plants, provide insights into the origin of key innovations and early diversification of seed plants. The genome of Cycas panzhihuaensis was studied, revealing evidence of ancient whole-genome duplication and horizontal gene transfer from fungi. Furthermore, a sex determination mechanism controlled by MADS-Box genes was found to be shared by cycads and Ginkgo. This study fills an important knowledge gap in genome structure and evolution in seed plants.

Miocene geologic dynamics of the Australian Sahul Shelf determined the biogeographic patterns of freshwater planorbid snails (Miratestinae) in the Indo-Australian Archipelago

Pauline Gauffre-Autelin et al.

Summary: Research on the historical biogeography of the Miratestinae, a subfamily of Planorbidae, revealed the origin and colonization processes of this group in the Indo-Australian Archipelago. The study identified the potential presence of 16 new species within the Miratestinae. Results suggest an Australian origin for the Miratestinae and highlight jump dispersal as the main colonization process, with colonization and diversification events coinciding with major geological events in the region.

Post-Oligocene diversification in Australia: Phylogeography, systematics and new species of Gonocarpus (Haloragaceae)

Michael L. Moody et al.

Summary: The genus Gonocarpus, primarily found in Australia, has a diverse range of species with many endemic to the Southwest Australian Floristic Region. Originating in the early Miocene, Gonocarpus has undergone diversification, with most occurring over the late Miocene. Late Miocene aridification played a key role in the historical biogeography of the genus.

MEGA11 Molecular Evolutionary Genetics Analysis Version 11

Koichiro Tamura et al.

Summary: MEGA software, a mature tool for computational molecular evolution, has been enhanced with new additions for building timetrees of species, pathogens, and gene families using rapid relaxed-clock methods. These additions include methods for estimating divergence times, confidence intervals, and new options for tagging sequences with spatiotemporal sampling information. The enhancements aim to improve user experience, result quality, and the pace of biological discovery.
