Fibronectin type III domain-containing protein 5 promotes autophagy via the AMPK/mTOR signaling pathway in hepatocellular carcinoma cells, contributing to nab-paclitaxel chemoresistance

Yinji Zhou et al.

Summary: This study found that FNDC5, which is highly expressed in hepatocellular carcinoma, can promote cell proliferation, invasion, and chemotherapy resistance. FNDC5 mechanistically promotes autophagy via the AMPK/mTOR signaling pathway, thereby reducing cell death induced by nab-paclitaxel. FNDC5 could serve as a biomarker for predicting the efficacy of nab-paclitaxel chemotherapy and as a therapeutic target to overcome resistance in hepatocellular carcinoma chemotherapy.

Progress and Challenges in the Biology of FNDC5 and Irisin

Steffen Maak et al.

Summary: The transmembrane protein FNDC5 was discovered in 2002 and later identified to be expressed in skeletal muscle, heart, and brain. A study in 2012 proposed that skeletal muscle FNDC5, when cleaved in response to exercise, could induce browning in white adipose tissue, leading to the release of irisin. More than 1000 papers have since been published exploring the roles of irisin, especially in adipose tissue and metabolism.

Highly accurate protein structure prediction with AlphaFold

John Jumper et al.

Summary: Proteins are essential for life, and accurate prediction of their structures is a crucial research problem. Current experimental methods are time-consuming, highlighting the need for accurate computational approaches to address the gap in structural coverage. Despite recent progress, existing methods fall short of atomic accuracy in protein structure prediction.

Exercise and Sestrin Mediate Speed and Lysosomal Activity in Drosophila by Partially Overlapping Mechanisms

Alyson Sujkowski et al.

Summary: Chronic exercise is important for healthspan in humans and various animal models, with Sestrins playing a critical role in driving physiological adaptations. Specifically, Sestrin is essential for preserving climbing speed in Drosophila during exercise, but not absolutely necessary for increasing lysosomal activity.

Exercise hormone irisin is a critical regulator of cognitive function

Mohammad R. Islam et al.

Summary: Irisin, a cleaved and circulating form of the exercise-induced membrane protein FNDC5, has been shown to mediate the beneficial effects of exercise on cognitive function, and improve cognitive function in mouse models of Alzheimer's disease. Irisin plays a crucial role in regulating cognitive benefits of exercise and may be a potential therapeutic agent for treating cognitive disorders, including Alzheimer's disease.
