Predictive performance of presence-only species distribution models: a benchmark study with reproducible code

Roozbeh Valavi et al.

Summary: This study reanalyzed a dataset of 225 species from six different regions to explore patterns in predictive performance across different methods. It found that the way models are fitted matters, with some emerging methods outperforming traditional regression algorithms.

Wild meat trade over the last 45 years in the Peruvian Amazon

Pedro Mayor et al.

Summary: The trade in wild meat plays a significant economic role in rural livelihoods, but is also considered a major cause of wildlife decline. Longitudinal monitoring in Iquitos, Peru showed a steady increase in wild meat sales over 45 years, contributing 1-2% to the urban diet. Efforts to protect biodiversity and prevent disease transmission in wild meat markets are crucial, especially in light of the recent COVID-19 pandemic.

Climate change increases cross-species viral transmission risk

Colin J. Carlson et al.

Summary: At least 10,000 virus species have the potential to infect humans. However, changes in climate and land use may lead to viral sharing among different species of wild mammals, increasing the risk of zoonotic diseases. Using simulations, researchers found that future viral sharing could occur in high elevation areas, biodiversity hotspots, and regions with high human population density in Asia and Africa. Bats, due to their ability to disperse, are the main contributors to novel viral sharing and are likely to facilitate future disease emergence in humans.

Over half of known human pathogenic diseases can be aggravated by climate change

Camilo Mora et al.

Summary: Climate hazards have been shown to worsen the majority of human pathogenic diseases, with some diseases being mitigated in certain conditions. This highlights the urgent need to reduce greenhouse gas emissions as a solution.

Incorporating time into the traditional correlational distributional modelling framework: A proof-of-concept using the Wood Thrush Hylocichla mustelina

Kate Ingenloff et al.

Summary: Accurate spatio-temporal information about species' geographic distributions is crucial for biodiversity analyses in conservation and planning. Traditional correlative modelling approaches, while useful for exploring species distributions, have limitations that impact model quality and reliability. By incorporating time specificity into the modelling framework, it is possible to optimize the performance of traditional correlative niche models in distributional ecology contexts.
