On the Numerical Modeling of Flax/PLA Bumper Beams

Liu Jiao-Wang et al.

Summary: This study focuses on developing a numerical model to predict the failure modes of green composite bumper beams with different cross sections. The finite element model was validated against experimental results and used to analyze the impact energy and cross-section roundness on the failure modes.

A Review of Recent Advances in Hybrid Natural Fiber Reinforced Polymer Composites

Jorge Neto et al.

Summary: This paper provides an overview of recent advances in hybrid natural fiber reinforced polymer composites. The main factors affecting the performance of hybrid fiber-reinforced composites are discussed, and the effects of hybridization on the mechanical and thermal properties of hybrid composites reinforced with various types of natural fibers (such as sisal, jute, curaua, ramie, banana, etc.) or natural fibers combined with synthetic fibers are presented. The water absorption behavior of hybrid fiber-reinforced composites is also discussed.

Temperature effect on impact response of flax/epoxy laminates: Analytical, numerical and experimental results

Elena Raponi et al.

Summary: Polymer composite materials are widely used in various industrial fields, with vegetable fibers showing potential as substitutes for traditional reinforcements. The study provides a comprehensive characterization of the impact behavior of twill flax/epoxy composites and evaluates the effect of impact temperatures on residual flexural properties. Analytical and numerical models were able to accurately predict the impact load threshold and draw load-displacement curves that closely matched experimental results.

A Review on Natural Fiber Bio-Composites, Surface Modifications and Applications

Mohammed Zwawi

Summary: The focus on eco-friendly bio-composites has increased due to environmental concerns and global warming. Natural fibers are abundant, low-cost to harvest, and possess adequate mechanical properties, making them a viable alternative to synthetic fibers. Bio-composites are degradable, renewable, non-toxic, and have comparable properties to synthetic fiber composites, leading to their widespread use in industries such as construction, automotive, packaging, medicine, and cosmetics.

Comparing the impact resistance of flax/epoxy and glass/epoxy composites through experiments and numerical simulations

R. Panciroli et al.

Summary: This paper aims to compare the impact resistance of natural fiber composites against a similar glass-fiber counterpart. Experimental study and numerical simulations provide insights on the major damage mechanism and the difference in impact resistance, mainly attributed to the lower fiber strength in natural fiber composites. Research suggests that modeling parameters could be utilized to improve the reliability of the numerical solution in terms of energy absorption during the impact.
