Optimization of dome shape for filament wound pressure vessels using data-driven evolutionary algorithms

Dominik Vondracek et al.

Summary: Filament wound glass/epoxy and carbon/epoxy pressure vessels were designed using a data-driven evolutionary approach and classical mechanics-based analysis. Analytical solutions for three known end domes and an end dome based on Hoffman's criterion were used to create surrogate models through two different evolutionary optimization algorithms. Composite pressure vessels are manufactured by filament winding. The stresses in the end domes were evaluated analytically and compared, and the critical areas of the shells were evaluated using the Hoffman strength criterion. The best dome shape for given material and polar hole/equator ratio was selected to address various types of failure.

Composite Layer Design Using Classical Laminate Theory for High Pressure Hydrogen Vessel (Type 4)

Gunyoung Park et al.

Summary: As air pollution worsens, the demand for clean energy vehicles increases, leading to advancements in automotive industries. Hydrogen-powered vehicles, in particular, require safe and lightweight high-pressure storage vessels for hydrogen gas. This study proposes a calculation method using the Classical Laminate Theory to design a composite layer for a high-pressure hydrogen vessel (Type 4). The design aims to achieve lightweightness and provides more accurate thickness and pattern compared to netting theory and faster results than FEA.

Reliability design of a pressure vessel made of composite materials

Luigi Solazzi et al.

Summary: This research evaluates the reliability of pressure vessels made of composite materials in terms of stress and burst pressure, with results showing that the weight of carbon fiber vessels is only 17% of steel vessels, and the reliability of components made from composite materials is similar to those made from steel or aluminum alloy. The study also considered geometric variations, material properties, and layer numbers in the evaluation of component reliability and deterministic safety coefficients.

Lightweight design of variable-angle filament-wound cylinders combining Kriging-based metamodels with particle swarm optimization

Zhihua Wang et al.

Summary: In this study, variable-angle filament-wound (VAFW) cylinders were optimized for minimum mass under manufacturing constraints and various design loads using particle swarm optimization and Kriging-based metamodels. The nonlinear relationship between the tow winding angle and thickness in VAFW structures was explored using a design parameterization based on a second-order polynomial variation. A Bogner-Fox-Schmit-Castro finite element was used to accurately represent the variable stiffness properties of the shells. The analysis of the design space using metamodels revealed a gap in the buckling strength, which was confirmed through genetic algorithm optimizations. Extreme lightweight and buckling-resistant designs were achieved along with non-conventional optimum layouts thanks to the tailored thickness buildup.

Design, modeling, optimization, manufacturing and testing of variable-angle filament-wound cylinders

Jose Humberto S. Almeida et al.

Summary: This work demonstrates the potential of manufacturing variable-angle composite cylinders using filament winding. The approach allows different filament angles along the axial direction by dividing the cylinder into regions of constant angle. The VAFW design shows significantly higher buckling strength, stiffness, and absorbed energy compared to the constant-angle configuration.

Summary: The study focuses on developing interatomic potentials for Aluminum and binary Al-Li system using a modified embedded atom method and genetic algorithms. These potentials can predict physical properties in agreement with Density Functional Theory calculations. The new MEAM potential is able to produce multiple properties with minimal error, validating the method. Metamodels are then constructed for studying maximum interphase strength using multi-objective evolutionary algorithms.
