Sexual Minority Youth E-Cigarette Use

Sunday Azagba et al.

Summary: There is consistent evidence that sexual minority youth (SMY) use more traditional cigarettes than their non-SMY counterparts. However, there is relatively less information on e-cigarettes and, importantly, differences between and within SMY populations by race and ethnicity and sex. This study examines e-cigarette use by sexual orientation status and the intersection of race and ethnicity and sex.

Differences in health care provider advice on abstaining from tobacco use: Findings from the 2020 National Youth Tobacco Survey

Osayande Agbonlahor et al.

Summary: The analysis of the 2020 National Youth Tobacco Survey revealed that many American adolescents do not receive advice from healthcare providers on tobacco prevention and cessation, especially among certain racial/ethnic and sexual minority groups. Therefore, it is necessary to strengthen smoking prevention and cessation advice for adolescents in all demographic groups, while also training healthcare providers and improving the delivery of e-cigarette advice to adolescents.

The Impact of The Real Cost Vaping and Smoking Ads across Tobacco Products

Sarah D. Kowitt et al.

Summary: This study examined the spillover effects of tobacco communication campaigns on smoking and vaping outcomes among U.S. adolescents. It found that exposure to smoking prevention ads had beneficial effects on vaping outcomes, while exposure to vaping prevention ads did not have any detrimental effects on smoking-related outcomes. These findings suggest the potential of smoking prevention campaigns to also reduce vaping among adolescents.

Cardiopulmonary Consequences of Vaping in Adolescents: A Scientific Statement From the American Heart Association

Loren E. Wold et al.

Summary: Although e-cigarettes are positioned as cessation aids, their novelty has led to unintended use among adolescents. Most studies focus on adult users, making it difficult to translate the health effects to adolescents. Therefore, a comprehensive understanding of the respiratory and cardiovascular consequences of e-cigarette use is necessary to guide treatment and prevention strategies.

Tobacco Screening Practices and Perceived Barriers to Offering Tobacco Cessation Services among Texas Health Care Centers Providing Behavioral Health Treatment

Ammar D. Siddiqi et al.

Summary: 80% of surveyed centers mandated tobacco use screenings, which were significantly more likely to have hard stops for tobacco use status in health records and marginally more likely to provide training on tobacco screening to providers. The most common barriers to tobacco use disorder care provision were competing diagnoses, lack of community resources, perceived lack of time, provider knowledge/confidence, and patient compliance.
