Micro drilling of PMMA with double-pulse femtosecond laser

Jiaqun Li et al.

Summary: Micro holes drilling in polymers has various industrial and research applications, where fabrication of high aspect ratio micro holes is crucial for advanced applications. In this study, an enhancement in drilling on poly-methyl methacrylate (PMMA) is reported using double-pulse femtosecond laser. Compared to single pulse, the achievable depth can be increased by 50% with a pulse delay of 100 fs and gradually decreases with increasing delay. The depth evolution with increasing pulse number is investigated. When the micro hole depth reaches a certain value, the processing speed of double pulse is less restricted than single pulse. Furthermore, the relationship between the depth improvement and electrons decay together with absorption increase is studied.

Experimental investigation on the effect of spot diameter on continuous-wave laser welding of copper and aluminum thin sheets for battery manufacturing

Vincenzo Dimatteo et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effect of spot diameter on the dissimilar laser autogenous lap-welding of copper and aluminum, finding that a smaller spot diameter promoted the formation of sound weld beads. By selecting the correct process parameters, good mechanical properties and low contact resistance could be achieved.

Error compensation for laser line scanners

M. Vlaeyen et al.

Summary: An algorithm is proposed in this paper to compensate the systematic error of lasers line scanned data based on the measurement error model of the measurement system. The iterative process of the algorithm accurately determines geometrical features solely using an optical measurement device. Experimental research demonstrates the reduction of systematic error as a function of the scan strategy due to the compensation by the algorithm.
