U-Pb and Lu-Hf zircon data of the grenvilian arc-related Za circumflex accent mbu acute accent e, FIngo`e and Cazula supracrustal complexes, Southern Irumide Belt, NW Mozambique

T. S. Petry et al.

Summary: The Supracrustal rocks from the Za<SIC>mbue’ and FIngoe’ Supergroups as well as the Cazula Group in NW Mozambique provide a sedimentation record associated with the Rodinia supercontinent. Detrital zircon dating and Lu-Hf isotope analysis reveal similar ages for the main source rocks, indicating arc-related basins with a juvenile source signature and limited older continental crust contributions. This, along with structural data, points to a complex and polyphasic evolution of the area related to the accretionary and collisional phases of the Irumide Orogeny.

Maximum depositional age estimation revisited

Pieter Vermeesch

Summary: In a recent review, nine methods of estimating the maximum depositional age (MDA) of siliclastic rocks using detrital geochronology were compared, revealing biases in most methods. The Maximum Likelihood Age (MLA) algorithm, based on a binary mixture of distributions, was found to successfully estimate MDA with less bias than ad hoc methods. This approach has potential applications beyond detrital geochronology.

Neoproterozoic crustal growth in southern Malawi: New insights from petrology, geochemistry, and U-Pb zircon geochronology, and implications for the Kalahari Craton-Congo Craton amalgamation

Toshiaki Tsunogae et al.

Summary: The southern part of the Malawi Basement Complex provides insights into the complex history of collisions between ancient cratons and magmatic arcs. Geochemical and petrological data suggest a series of metamorphic and magmatic events, with remnants of the Stenian-Tonian magmatic arc being metamorphosed around 560 Ma. This region may correspond to a suture zone formed by the latest Neoproterozoic collision between the Kalahari and Congo Cratons.
