Organic preservation of vase-shaped microfossils from the late Tonian Chuar Group, Grand Canyon, Arizona, USA

Summary: This study aims to verify whether VSM microfossils from the Chuar Group contain original organic material. It is found that VSM test walls contain carbon, iron, and sulfur, while silica is present in the surrounding matrix. Optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy analysis confirm that the Walcott VSM test walls are organic and sometimes secondarily pyritized. Based on this evidence, it is concluded that VSM microfossils can preserve original organic test material.

A Bayesian Approach to Inferring Depositional Ages Applied to a Late Tonian Reference Section in Svalbard

Summary: The application of high precision geochronology has greatly improved the age control and calibration of Proterozoic stratigraphic successions and events. However, there are still some poorly dated successions and time intervals. This study uses Bayesian inference and a thermal subsidence model to provide realistic ages and uncertainties for a Tonian composite section in Svalbard, which can be applied to calibrate other Tonian successions.

Maximum depositional age estimation revisited

Summary: In a recent review, nine methods of estimating the maximum depositional age (MDA) of siliclastic rocks using detrital geochronology were compared, revealing biases in most methods. The Maximum Likelihood Age (MLA) algorithm, based on a binary mixture of distributions, was found to successfully estimate MDA with less bias than ad hoc methods. This approach has potential applications beyond detrital geochronology.

Recalibrating Rodinian rifting in the northwestern United States
