Late Neoarchean plate subduction in Western North China Craton: Evidence from ca. 2.51 Ga to 2.46 Ga basement rocks in Northern Ordos Basin

Gang Tian et al.

Summary: Research reveals that the Precambrian tectonic evolution in the western North China Craton (NCC) and the tectonic division are poorly understood due to limited exposure beneath the Ordos Basin. By analyzing orthogneiss samples from the North Ordos Basin, it is found that the formation of various gneiss types occurred at around 2.51-2.46 Ga, indicating a transition from a compressional regime to an extensional regime. These gneisses originated from different geological processes, such as partial melting of mafic island-arc crust and mantle metasomatism by subduction fluids and melts. The findings suggest the involvement of the North Ordos Basin in the collision event between the Yinshan Block and Ordos Block.

Reconstructing crustal thickness evolution from europium anomalies in detrital zircons

Ming Tang et al.

Summary: A new data compilation shows a positive correlation between zircon Eu/Eu* and crustal thickness in intermediate to felsic rocks, which has been used to infer crustal thickness. The calibration of a crustal thickness proxy based on Eu anomalies in zircons allows for the reconstruction of crustal thickness evolution in magmatic arcs and orogens. Analysis of detrital zircons from southern Tibet reveals two episodes of crustal thickening since the Cretaceous, temporally consistent with contractional deformation of sedimentary strata.

Detrital zircon U-Pb-Hf isotopes from the Yanliao intracontinental rift sediments: Implications for multiple phases of Neoarchean-Paleoproterozoic juvenile crustal growth in the North China Craton

Xiaoping Liu et al.

Summary: The Late Neoarchean-Paleoproterozoic period marked a significant time of continental growth and recycling, with the assembly and subsequent breakup of the Columbia supercontinent. The North China Craton preserves important records of tectonic activities and crust building processes during this time. The study findings suggest significant juvenile crust accretion in the Yanliao intracontinental rift during the Neoarchean and Paleoproterozoic periods.

New thinking and understanding for the researches on the basement of Ordos Block

Zhang ChengLi et al.

Summary: Based on petrographic observations, geochronological data, and isotopic analyses of basement samples, a 2.2-2.0Ga arc-magmatism belt is identified in the Ordos Block. The basement is divided into northern and southern parts, with different geological histories. The Datong-Huachi fault likely separates these two parts, with the northern part forming a continental margin on Neoarchean basement and the southern part representing the main part of the Ordos Block basement.
